I actually saw a fellow use BIAB for playing. I think he had just put the REAL tracks over to a cd. He was putting them through about 100-150 watt p.a.?? Wasn't real loud at all. Anyway I was impressed how good it sounded until one track had a some piano in it. I couldn't figure it out until later. A piano can produce a big broad sound especially when you're right in front of it. The recording sounded ok but it lacked that big sound for the piano. The bass & drums sounded big enough & were EQ'd very nicely. "playing rootless voicing's" I am guessing this is correct. You would probably want to use a full chord to get a good backing. I am wondering if you could get the good backing then add something else using a looper. Might be a good experiment.

If the pedal allowed you to record chords over the bass and drums, it would be more useful. I don't think I could stand soloing over just a bass line and drums for practicing. I want to hear how my lines sound over the chord changes themselves. Is there a looper that also creates drum and bass lines?

Odd comment. So you dont like the sound of guitar trio? I personally much prefer not having chords behind me

The B track would probable already have bass & drums. I mentioned earlier that apparently they are using BIAB tracks or styles for this pedal so I will def wait to see what version 2 has to offer.

Jeff, I get your comment about the irealb's piano - I also prefer without it. But I find it quite an improvement over biab, rhythmic section is much more realistic and the "even" option is great for anyone who's aiming to play jazz like it's played in 2015 (which I believe most people here aren't).
People tend to care too much about play-alongs, just try to play with real people. If not with a metronome or with a looper, much better than any play along or backing track. Most pros I know just use a metronome when they practice.

Then you need to buy some ear training stuff not this pedal, bass lines give you all the info you need. And self comp during solos is mandatory for any guitar player.

So you don't like the sound of Wes Montgomery's Smokin' At The Half Note because Wynton Kelly plays piano on it? I played in jazz clubs for many years in a quintet that had no piano. Playing five sets of sophisticated hard bop arrangements with lots of chord changes and only getting to solo over a bass line and drums is boring to me after doing it for two decades. When practicing with a pedal that creates a backup band I would prefer to be able to add chords to the track. That is not odd.

Very arrogant and inaccurate response. I can play just fine over just a bass line, thank you very much. I did it for way too long, and it gets boring to me after awhile. If I am going to pay for a band-in-a-box pedal, it needs to have chord capability to get my interest. Personal choice. By the way, you have posted a lot about effects pedals. I think you need to buy some guitar instruction material or take some lessons. The guitar and an amp gives you all the sounds you need. The ability to sound good on your instrument without effects is mandatory for any guitar player.

I can play without effects (it the amp has reverb) and had plenty of classes in my life, thanks.

I am going to look into this pedal. It really looks interesting and fun.

One more video with some of the Jazz setting...

where was the jazz setting? lol. More like a soul setting. Cool but not jazz.

Ha! Ha! I cannot disagree.

Still, next trip to Guitar Center, I am going to give it a go and see if the drum and bass sound quality is at least acceptable in person.

I did like that "jam". I think it'd be fun to play with but the real test is something other than i iv v chords. I suspect it wouldn't handle "all the things you are". Doesn't mean it wouldn't be a useful tool though.

Here is link to the owner's manual.
On page 12, it states the device can handle one chord per beat so this appears to be on limitation. I would think you could do a lot with that in a Jazz context, assuming the pedal can keep up.
I did not have time to read any further, unfortunately.

I suspect that it would get fooled with altered chords and chords that aren't just Dom7 Min7 Maj7 . the only way to tell would be to buy and try.
And the power (current) requirement is 500ma which means even the fancy $200 pedal power supply I have that *CAN* power the digitech looper cannot power this. So you will have to have an even more expensive pedal power supply or use 2-3 outputs in parallel on one of your existing power supplies. (Or always use the wall wart)
-
Your supposition is correct here. In my glancing through the manual, I caught a section that stated to use only major, minor, dominant, and 7th chords - no altered chords.

I am sure you know much better than me the full implications this will have on the bass line. I immediately wonder how different the bass line for an altered chord would be in comparison to one over non-altered chords, and is the pedal designed to mimic this.
-
it would probably be fine in terms of bass notes. I'll have to check out one at guitar center

Yeah the shop near me got them in & called me. I couldn't resist. It is a kick messing around with it. As others have said I wouldn't play live with it but it is great for practice & just jamming about.

i wonder if you played it a walking bass line
it would play that line back to you as string bass ....
that would be great

The digitech looks interesting, but I would really want to hear a proper demo of all the jazz styles, especially swing ones. Anyone can program a bossa groove to sound reasonably ok. The short bit of 'swing' in that demo did not sound that good to me. Couldn't hear much ride cymbal and the snare accents sounded rather synthetic and mechanical.
I realised last night I can do much the same thing on my iPad, with a bit of Garageband editing. I copied an IrealPro tune for one chorus into Garageband (bass line only). Then I selected a Max Roach (who's he? kidding) drum loop in Drum Genius and recorded it into the same song, for one chorus. You just have to make sure all 3 apps have the same tempo set, and Garageband needs to have 'Automatic' number of bars song length.
Then you zoom in, split and delete the 'dead' bit of audio off the front of the tracks so they both start exactly where the 'music' starts (this is easier than it sounds really). Then you truncate the song length to e.g. 32 bars, and hey presto, you have a perfect drum and bass loop. Although the bass line from IrealPro is a bit synthetic, the superb-sounding drum loop covers this up pretty well.
Also it means you have a saved loop, and if you want chords added, you can just comp them yourself into Garageband. Then playback with or without the chords as you wish.
I did have to download the Audiobus app to copy DrumGenius into Garageband (it didn't seem to work with the inter-app thing although it's supposed to). But now I prefer the Audiobus interface anyway, it works the exactly same way with every app, which Apple's 'inter-app' thing does not seem to do. Total cost of the 3 apps is probably under £25 compared to £135 for the Digitech.
I can't change the tempo of my saved loops, but that doesn't bother me much. I can easily select a different tempo drum loop and build another one. Hmm, maybe Jack de Johnette next time?
Also Drum Genius has some amazing 'world' beats, e.g. Brazilian, Cuban, African, Caribbean etc. Would be interesting to see if I can combine some of these with a suitable bass line, e.g. bossa or samba might work.

I don't know any real people .....
