Sounds like a tone control rolled off... but sounds really good. Don't forget this is a professional recording, good mics and good processing (eq, mixing, etc...).
-
Ewwww not for me my friend.
He managed to make it sound like any dead £500 guitar imo
In fact he could have got more tone out of a solid body :-))
You have interesting taste
-
A little heavy handed on the compression, maybe.
-
Sounds like a very light touch, tone rolled off.
-
I like it ... avery tasty solo IMHO
but agree on maybe too much compression ...
and it does seem like he went out of his way to make a super nice expensive carved top guitar sound like a super nice not so expensive laminated guitar
-
I thought the tone worked well for the setting. It was a good match for the sax tone and with Bubble's understated vocals.
-
Sounds great to me. But those guys sure make me feel old !!!!!
-
It is a Norlin L-5CES after all...

There was about $15K of mics within the first minute of the video. That level of studio should make everything sound great.
-
Compression!!!!! Not my bag. Sounds like he shoulda been chickin' pickin.'

Looks to me like Buble when out of his way to get the youngest sidemen he could without sacrificing the integrity and quality of his recording. I wouldn't be surprised if it was recorded at Juliard or some place similar. If that's what he did . . then good on him. The kids did a great job and were worthy of the opportunity. Wasn't the best vocal performance I've ever seen by Buble . . and I agree that the tone was unbefitting of an L5CES.

-
Holy compression, Batman.
You really liked that tone? That's some harsh clipping.
-
Buble ain't my bag either...i dunno if this makes any sense, but it sounds like his singing voice is a "character," like his impression of what a rat pack guy should sound like...i dunno...rubs me the wrong way.
-
Exciting to see such young musicians getting to be in the spotlight... maybe there's hope afterall. I agree with Bluedawg though, sounds laminate-y, pardon my french.
-
I liked it. A little less compression would be better, but other than that the guitar (and the player) sounded good to me. There's nothing wrong with a Norlin L5. I have had a couple of them and they were excellent.

Sounds like he's going direct into the board, so the recording engineer has total contral of the tone. I've been there before and it's always a bummer as a player because you have to deal w/ a less than desirable tone to work with. I think if the guitar was Johnny Smith w/ a floater it would have been a much less squashed type of tone.
-
I should probably be a bit more generous since he's from here in Burnaby but that's the exact same thing I've always gotten from him.

He's definitely got a very showy, schmalzy vibe. I think his voice is more Mel Torme than Dean Martin or Sinatra.

Keith, that was a nudge-nudge-wink-wink joke. Norlin gets such bad rap it's too easy to blame it on the Norlin L-5CES.

I like Bublé. My sister likes Bublé. Most women whom I know who don't know anything about the Great American Songbook or jazz like Bublé. Bublé channels Sinatra. In an age where there are few real singers left Bublé is fresh air. You hear geezer Rod Stewart massacre the GAS you are sort of thankful for Bublé.
I like the dude although his tough 'hood Brooklyn street-smart persona comes across as contrived as he is Canadian!
How come there are no black male singers doing this kind of stuff? No black women singers either? Where are the Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, Carmen McCrae, Lena Horne, Billy Holliday of today?Last edited by Jabberwocky; 11-21-2014 at 07:12 AM.

Singing neo soul and acid jazz. Some of them are really good too. Maysa does a lot of fluff but when she gets serious, she's amazing. So is Brenda Boykins. Lalah Hathaway is as good as anyone ever.
