Lovely playing and tone. There doesn't seem to be many of these model guitars for sale though.

The best part of living in Chicago is getting to see him regularly. One of the greatest, under appreciated guitarists, IMO. He's a total master in that Wes Montgomery/Benson school. Everything from his groove, to tone, to vocabulary is just solid.

There's a kick ass vid of Caravan from that same set online where he demonstrates some stellar fast picking.

I'm in the audience in this one:

he's one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet too but unfortunately was chased off of this and other forums by the hobbyists who knew better.

That's the good stuf, right there.

How was he chased off? Can you recall the threads in which he was mistreated?

He not only stole every lick from George Benson, he even stole his packing tape trick.

I can't remember exactly, but I think it was one of those "playing for free" threads that got ugly.

saddest thing is, those members that chased a few pros off here, most of them aren't even around anymore.

I get why people get so heated on internet forums. It's like road rage: anonymous. However, we jazz aficionados are an intelligent educated bunch who should be able to compartmentalize those emotions and mitigate the consequences.

Dunno, man. Aren't you in the burbs?

We should try to meet up and jam sometime. If you ever want to stop by one of my solo gigs and sit in on a few songs, that'd be cool, too.

Man, that sucks. Honestly though, if I were in his shoes I'd probably avoid forums as well.

There's an old thread on another site where he talks a little bit about the system of playing/picking/improvising that Benson himself taught Johnson, but he never gets around to details because some guy starts ragging on him for playing standards. Ugh.

Between he and Bobby Broom, Fareed Haque out at NIU, and a few others, Chicago has some serious world-class heavy hitter guitar players making the rounds.

Not necessarily. I used it for years on a 165 and didn't leave any residue once cleaned off with naptha..

The same thoughts crossed my mind. It seems I read posts about every Heritage jazz model (KB, SE, GE, Sweet 16 etc) EXCEPT for the signature Henry Johnson. Yet by all accounts (what few there are), it seems like it's a great guitar, as Mr. Johnson's videos demonstrate. Perhaps Patrick would be willing to share some insights about the HJ model. Jeff
Thanks as well to JZucker for posting the great video!

I might be wrong about this . . but, I believe the total number of the Henry Johnson model Heritage guitars sold up to this point in time, is less than . . 1

Don't we all "steal" licks from others? Don't we all at one time or another play the typical cliches? Don't we all from time to time quote memorable lines, heads, intros, outros . . . . within an improv? Are all of George's lines actually George's lines?

Henry's a great guy. He's also a great guitar player. He doesn't need to "steal" anything from anyone. If you hear a line and you like it . . then, why not cop it? Use it and expand on it? If you haven't heard The Henry Johnson Quartet, An Evening At Sea . . . you should do so. You'll hear some George within Henry's playing . . . but, you'll hear mostly Henry. Oh . . . and buy the way, the Heritage sounds great too. ;-)

Agreed. I thought the comment was a little over the top and wasn't sure if it was supposed to be a joke or not. If not, we can thank postings like that for why guys like Dicaprio, Bruno, Jones, Johnson, Bollenback and others don't bother to post on this forum.

Hi Patrick, do you know ht size of Henry's guitar? Looks like an 18" to me. He seems like a tall guy in the videos.
I love that cut away. Actually that's a beautiful looking instrument to me.

I don't know the stories behind why most of the public figures in the above post no longer frequent this forum, but I did read some of the posts that offended Jimmy Bruno over at rmmgj. The threads in question dealt with player style and whether or not said styles appealed to the participating forumites. When the thread moved onto Jimmy with some disapproving comments, he stepped in to defend himself against a perceived attack. He reacted to an opinion he didn't agree with.

There are certain topics that have to do with technique, theory, and experience that are objective and should be left to experts. Others subjective topics, such as gear choices, sound preference, playing style, and the like are open to anyone with ears and an interest in jazz guitar. I would never argue with Jimmy Bruno in terms of theory or technique, but I wouldn't expect anyone to "correct" my (or anyone's) taste.

    In response to Patrick2

Seriously, my entire jazz mission at this point is to steal as much from Ed Bickert and Wes Montgomery as I can stomach, not out of disrespect but b/c I want to internalize it to the point where I can continue on and develop my own things after learning from things and moments I've seriously loved.

If you are talking about Randy Johnson . . he's a really cool guy and I definitely like his playing. I'd love to see him participate here.

Henry's signature Heritage arch top is basically a Golden Eagle, with a 3.25" depth rather than the standard 3.00" . . . and it flaunts a Florentine cut away rather than a Venetian cut away. Oh . . the other difference is that it has L5 block inlays on the FB instead of the cloud inlays which are standard on the Golden Eagle.

If you order one . . for an up charge of $1,000 . . . Heritage will include some of Henry's chops too. However, how you use them, is purely your own responsibility.

That's the step so many people forget. Competence / licks / technique are much more idolized than an unique voice.
