I didn't mean to suggest that drummers should always play softly. I meant they should be able to vary their attack and amplitude musically, and most of them don't. Most of them just play triple forte all the time with heavy sticks, or so it seems, as if they're not listening to the tune or the band.
Some drummers ought to spend time listening to greats like Peter Erskine, Jack DeJohnette, or even Shelly Manne. That's what I'm talking about. Few can ever play like them, but they sure provide the inspiration and concepts.

I understand your point Section, sometimes I have the same feeling. But I have to say a soft drummer pisses me off much more than a loud one
