    I prefer ebony to a looser grained rosewood but I think my favorite is pao ferro. Less bright than ebony, but brighter than most rosewood, and with a grain more like ebony. YMMV.

    It depends... on every other thing about the guitar. You can't just single out the fretboard. (sorry couldn't resist. )
