Just to change the subject for a moment:
the Portugal vs. Spain game didn't exactly blow me away.

It was tiresome. Neither team deserved to win. I was praying it wouldn't go to extra time!
-
When Spain finally scored i was like, "well here we go, these last few minutes of extra time are gonna be intense!"
And then, nah.
-
There's been a lot of really late goals, you literally can't turn your head away after 80 minutes!
-
-
Good first half in the Belgium vs. US game. I'm definitely rooting for one of the teams...

After watching yet another ponderous Spain game, my money is still firmly on Spain winning the 2026 World Cup.
I've got to say, Spain know how to produce a very dull game and win.
In the other game, the USA team were inept, producing a comedy of errors against an uninspiring Belgium team.
Maybe, in the next four years the USA will learn to play Football against higher ranking teams.
-
Unless something truly amazing takes place, this World Cup will go down as a dud.
The fans, on the other hand, just keep getting better and better with each tournament, as if to compensate for the lack of interest on the pitch.
-
I wish I’d been there when the Belgian fans, having seen their team beat the US, did a mass “Trump Dance”, whilst singing “Overturn This!”
Apologies to any US fans here. Their team did look embarrassed about the political intervention. They never asked for it.
-
-
It won’t work. There’s no threat.
-
You know Trump called up FIFA today & said
"Just find me 4 more goals"
-
-
I was not surprised the US lost to Belgium, but I don't know what that was on the pitch last night. That was NOT the US team from the group stage. The sort of outside BS they had to deal with never helps, never. It's quite difficult to be apolitical when the political is so incredibly infuriating! Anyway....
As for Spain winning in the most boring way possible, I think they may have been studying tapes of Arsenal matches
I would very much like to see at least 2 of the remaining games be as much fun to watch as the Cabo Verde/Argentina game
-
Well, who’s a wanker now?
-
Never mind, Argentina plays Egypt very soon. It might get Messi…
-
Don't want to take anything away from Belgium, they were the better team, they played like it, and they won, deservedly. They have some exciting young players and a formidable veteran contingent on that squad too.
But the Americans played like a team that knew they had nothing to gain anymore from winning. I'm gonna go ahead and go there, because my next comments are not political-- they are a critique of the character of Donald Trump.
When you live your whole life connected and "calling in favors" is commonplace, you become desensitized (or you just don't care) about how others see it.
Was it a bad red card? Absolutely. I've been coaching youth soccer for 10 years and I played from first grade through high school. There was no intent, it wasn't even particularly reckless on Balogun's part, he leapt, he landed. But the call was made.
And then "the call" was made. And that shadow it cast was something the US team didn't ask for, and wouldn't have been able to escape no matter the outcome.
Just a big ol bummer. But I can pull for Belgium now, this convincing blowout and the come from behind last week, that's what a great team can be capable of.
-
Well. I'm going to go ahead and disagree with you on that, Rob. I didn't see all games, but what I saw didn't leave me disappointed. Maybe it's not the best, but certainly not a dud IMO. And I watched every WC since 1982.
Speaking of which, the only game that haunting me to this day was from that year, 1982. It was West Germany-France semi final. I still remember it like a great movie or a book that made lasting impression. Maybe because I was a kid, I dunno, but I don't have any other games that stuck with me like that.
Anyway, here's to 2026 WC, I'm loving it!
-
Yeah. Maybe yellow? It looked rough because it's a miserable place to catch someones cleats, but not a good reason for a red card.
But I don't know.
It's funny -- I was watching Norway/Brazil with my father in law and there would be contact plays where someone went down -- at the same time he would say "where's the whistle" and I would say "that was clean."
Maybe years of playing center back and shoving those fragile little strikers off the ball made me cold.
-
no red card? dangerous play, studs up, with no regard for the opponents health. in football that is a red card.

Love this:
