It produced a tone that sounded compressed , minimized attack, flat sustain, a dense "liquid" sound with a little bit of that note change "edgy slur" you get from putting a reverb/delay in front of a distorted gain stage (but without the delay or distortion sound). Most fun was to play as fast a possible yielding super legato.
I think Kurt Rosenwinkel did this before the POG. There was a specific boss delay that he used iirc. I think on albums like the call and maybe yam yam?

That was the album that I first heard Mike as well. I was lucky enough to hear Miles with MS on tour. Figured it might be my only chance to hear Miles here in Vancouver.. Stern was playing a Strat in that band because Miles wanted him to <raspy Miles voice on> Play like Jimi! <raspy Miles voice off>

    Let me know
For those of you who don't know this recording, it's Mike Stern playing standards at a level I've never heard him play since. Magic of chemistry and a once in a lifetime rhythm section.
    Hi Jimmy.

Firstly I wanted to thank you for making this recording. It's become one of my all time favourite live recordings and is a real gem!! :-)

You mentioned in response to Graham above that you might have more tracks available for study and transcription, and I'd be very interested in those, if you would be willing to share them perhaps ?

I've transcribed a lot of MS's solos over the years, but his playing on this recording is really out of this world and I'd love to hear more of the music if you have it?.

    Thanks so much,

    Pete

Yeah, be glad to. Harvie won't be releasing any more of the material so once I get it into the cloud I'll put it in a google drive and grant you access.
Be patient, remind me regularly and go for it!
    PM me your email.

It is a testament to Mike he can still play, let alone play brilliantly, following his injuries. And that he radiates a remarkable joy whenever he plays.
