In beginning to delve into Howard Roberts chord melody ideas, I found myself thinking “Oscar Peterson” over and over again.

So I started looking at some OP transcriptions, and am applying them to guitar.

My reading skills are far below par, as are my guitar skills lol. This is hurting my brain, wearing me out! Ten minutes of it and I have to put the guitar down for awhile.

This might seem like a point of failure, but taking something challenging like this in 10 minute chunks is a very efficient way to learn. It's how I learned to read music. The quip I tell people is, I read pretty good for a guitarist, I'm almost as good as a first year sax player.

Reading and playing skills below par, but attempting to read and play Oscar Peterson?

Thats like me going one on one with Wemby.

Challenging yourself is important but don't make it too painful. That said, as Allan suggested-- 10 minute chunks is actually just fine for learning.

I can read a melody, and get it right within a few passes. I can play a typical not too complex chord chart in a pass or two.

But dense chord staff notation? One measure at a time. Ten minutes, then done for awhile.
