I have the same plan as you.

I was working on this this morning and discovered that after quite a bit of work, I did have it memorized, so here's my shot at it:
I will keep practicing this to get it smoother, but I will also start working on In a Sentimental Mood from Book 1
If anyone wants to join in with their version of this tune or In a Sentimental Mood that would be great.
Allan has said he is going to post something, so I look forward to that.
I am open to comments and criticisms and questions.Last edited by alpop; 10-19-2025 at 01:05 PM.

Darn that dream..definitely not for a beginner in chord-melody.

This tune requires a solid understanding of II V substitutions, passing diminished chords and smooth voice leading between positions.
I doubt that you are able to do it yourself, heaving listened to your version of Last night when we were young

Sure doesn't look simple....

The point of this thread is to play Barry Galbraith's arrangements, not our own.

I’m struggling with my right hand technique, but here’s a recording of LNWWWY mistakes and allLNWWWY4.mp3

I didn't hear any mistakes, t'was good over all. You could refine your phrasing, vary the tempo more, arpeggiate fewer chords. I suspect I'm not telling you anything you don't already know. Do you play fingerstyle?

Galbraith’s Darn That Dream was also published in Just Jazz Guitar when the Mel Bay collection came out. It is among the easier arrangements in the first volume. And when I took a lesson with Bucky Pizzarelli some years ago, he taught me his arrangement (similar to Galbraith’s) in about half an hour of show-and-tell, trading my guitar back and forth, no chart. It is an interesting tune. with some dramatic harmony that lays quite easily on the guitar.

Thanks, suggestions are appreciated. I play a little bit of fingerstyle and flatpicking. I’m here to work on my playing and have fun.

We are both really close to nailing this. It is not easy, so good on you for your work. I like the sound you are getting.

I don't have the audio track for Barry's arrangement of Autumn in New York.

Thanks for posting that track. It sounds great and will be a helpful reference in learning the arrangement.

I am very slow when it comes to getting these to a reasonable performance level so it may take me a few weeks to post something here.

Well, I started on Imagination so I will finish it first - lost interest in Darn That Dream when I realized it is nearly identical to Jeff Arnold's version.

Oh man that’s a beautiful piece. I’m excited to learn it

Thanks for the heads up, but I have bought the Mel Bay books and I'm working off the notation in the books.

Reason I asked is because earlier you said: "Thanks for posting that track. It sounds great and will be a helpful reference in learning the arrangement."

Yes, same tracks.

Mick is probably surprised to read me here defending him, but your attacks are simply mean and personal. I'm respectfully asking you to stop it.

Thank you, Lawson, I've been doing my best to ignore HB.
No, I am not really surprised to see you defend me, we've had our disagreements but I've always thought you were a true gentlemen. Thank you for your support.
