There, now I've said it, no backing out now!
I have the same plan as you.

I was working on this this morning and discovered that after quite a bit of work, I did have it memorized, so here's my shot at it:

I will keep practicing this to get it smoother, but I will also start working on In a Sentimental Mood from Book 1

If anyone wants to join in with their version of this tune or In a Sentimental Mood that would be great.

Allan has said he is going to post something, so I look forward to that.

I am open to comments and criticisms and questions.

Maybe I should start a Darn That Dream thread for this study group: Possible Jazz Ballads by Jeff Arnold Study Group

P.S. - It turns out that Arnold pretty much copied Galbraith's arrangement, just made a few small changes.
Darn that dream..definitely not for a beginner in chord-melody.
It seems that you have no idea about the basics of teaching musicians who are just starting the chord-melody technique.
It’s not an easy standard; it sits more at an upper-intermediate to advanced level.
This tune requires a solid understanding of II V substitutions, passing diminished chords and smooth voice leading between positions.
I doubt that you are able to do it yourself, heaving listened to your version of Last night when we were young

    Sure doesn't look simple....

First off, nobody said this thread is for beginners, and secondly, we're not improvising on the tunes, so a "solid understanding of substititions," etc., is not needed.

I didn't hear any mistakes, t'was good over all. You could refine your phrasing, vary the tempo more, arpeggiate fewer chords. I suspect I'm not telling you anything you don't already know. Do you play fingerstyle?

My band-leader has instructed me not to take requests in this thread....

The tune is in Jeff Arnold's chord melody ballads book so it can't be that difficult (and it's very similar to Galbraith's arrangement). Nobody other than me has said they'd like to play it anyway.

Galbraith’s Darn That Dream was also published in Just Jazz Guitar when the Mel Bay collection came out. It is among the easier arrangements in the first volume. And when I took a lesson with Bucky Pizzarelli some years ago, he taught me his arrangement (similar to Galbraith’s) in about half an hour of show-and-tell, trading my guitar back and forth, no chart. It is an interesting tune. with some dramatic harmony that lays quite easily on the guitar.

Not sure why, but I find most of Galbraith’s arrangements easier to work through than most of Arnold’s.

Thanks, suggestions are appreciated. I play a little bit of fingerstyle and flatpicking. I’m here to work on my playing and have fun.

We are both really close to nailing this. It is not easy, so good on you for your work. I like the sound you are getting.

Oh, I didn't see that arrangement, some really lovely chord voicings.

    Here's the audio track:

In a Sentimental Mood by Barry Galbraith - Box.com

I don't have the audio track for Barry's arrangement of Autumn in New York.

Thanks for posting that track. It sounds great and will be a helpful reference in learning the arrangement.

I will get to work on this, and hopefully you and others will join in on the fun.

I am very slow when it comes to getting these to a reasonable performance level so it may take me a few weeks to post something here.

Well, I started on Imagination so I will finish it first - lost interest in Darn That Dream when I realized it is nearly identical to Jeff Arnold's version.

Make sure you check the "bootleg" pdf arrangements for errors, some tunes have quite a few of them (compare it to the audio track). If a chord voicing seems really unusual, it could be because Barry didn't play it.

Thanks for the heads up, but I have bought the Mel Bay books and I'm working off the notation in the books.

Yes the books come with access to the audio tracks.

So, I have the books with correct notation, and the audio tracks for the correct notation therefore I thanked you for the warning about the errors in the bootleg notation, but it is not something I need to concern myself with.

Reason I asked is because earlier you said: "Thanks for posting that track. It sounds great and will be a helpful reference in learning the arrangement."

Obviously you weren't speaking for yourself... I'm curious, are the audio tracks I've posted the same as the ones that came with your book?

Your persistent malicious attacks on mick-7 are not promoting a greater love and capability for making good music. Mick and i have had our own conflicts in the past, but he has worked very hard to start this project and to encourage others to participate. You have made your point, and now you seem only to be attacking him personally. It is not enhancing your reputation on the forum to do this. it is not promoting great jazz playing. It is not encouraging others to be a part of this group.
In short, you aren't really hurting Mick; you are just hurting yourself.
Mick is probably surprised to read me here defending him, but your attacks are simply mean and personal. I'm respectfully asking you to stop it.

Thank you, Lawson, I've been doing my best to ignore HB.

No, I am not really surprised to see you defend me, we've had our disagreements but I've always thought you were a true gentlemen. Thank you for your support.
