Hey everyone,
I wanted to send a massive thank you to this community for helping me pick out my new guitar. Thanks to your advice, I’ve fulfilled a dream and picked up an Ibanez ASV10AL semi-hollow. I couldn't be happier with the choice.
Even looking at it from a purely aesthetic standpoint, I’ve always loved this shape. I have to admit, though, I was pretty shocked by the weight! Being in my 20s, it's not a dealbreaker, but it never crossed my mind that layered maple and a mahogany neck could outweigh a Stratocaster.
The Build & Cost Breakdown
I bought the guitar used for about $380. I spent another $110 or so on hardware and electronics. Aside from the strings and capacitors, almost everything I used was sourced from China (Fleor, Guyker, etc.). Originally, the guitar had a very cool, "distressed" dark gray finish on the hardware, but I wanted to take it in a different direction.
When I first plugged it into my 50W tube amp, it sounded beautiful—open, clear, and rich. Since I used to play mostly alt-rock, I almost felt bad changing it because it was a rock machine in its stock form. But now? It’s a pure jazz machine.
Here is what I swapped in:
Tailpiece: Fleor standard ($6)
Bridge: Guyker Roller Bridge ($11)
Pickups: Fleor Alnico 2 Humbuckers (~7-8k Ohm, wired like a Seymour Duncan) ($24)
Tuners: ARM Locking Tuners ($21)
Pots: Fleor 500kA Logarithmic ($10 for the set)
For the pickups, I had to buy separate covers since they came with plastic frames. I used a mini-grinder with sandpaper to prep the surfaces for soldering, and afterwards, I pot them myself in a 1:5 mixture of beeswax and paraffin. The result? Zero microphonics or unwanted noise from the amp.
The "Cheap" Hardware Debate
Whether we like it or not, Chinese manufacturers are making fantastic hardware these days. I won’t claim they beat high-end boutique brands in metallurgy, but I’m not someone who needs "top-shelf" labels for the sake of it. This guitar sounds so good that I feel zero need to upgrade to Toneriders or anything more expensive.
I’m currently running a fresh set of Pyramid 11-48 roundwounds that came with the guitar. Even though I’m moving toward jazz and learning fingerstyle/fretboard navigation, it felt like a sin to throw away brand-new strings!
The Electronics Journey
The Fleor pots are decent—they aren't as silky smooth as Alphas or as consistent as Bourns/CTS, but they don't scratch or skip. I also dropped in a cheap 3-way switch (which has a very satisfying "click") and a Switchcraft jack I had lying around.
The real "aha!" moment was the capacitors. I started with standard 22nF caps, but the guitar stayed way too bright for that smoky jazz tone. On a Saturday, an hour before closing, I raced across town to grab two 33nF film capacitors. That made all the difference. It's now exactly the sound I had in my head.
Final Thoughts
I finally understand why jazz guitars are so specific. You can't fake this. None of my other guitars—not even my custom Jazzmaster-style build with humbuckers—can match this "dark and thick" tone.
The sound is warm, round, and deep. It has honestly made me fall in love with playing all over again. When I play this guitar, I think of fireplaces, warm meals, and autumn walks in the park. It’s a "sit down and get lost in thought" kind of instrument.
For those curious about the budget gear: I started my journey in guitar tech/servicing. I’ve held everything from "worth a 6-pack of beer" guitars to "worth a used car" guitars. The leap in quality from Chinese factories is massive. I don't plan on upgrading further because, for me, the diminishing returns hit hard after this point. The tuners hold perfectly, the bridge is smooth, and the pickups are clear and balanced. Total spend on parts was roughly $130.
Thanks again for the help. I hope everyone finds that "perfect corner" of tone that brings them this much joy. And I finally get why people prefer playing with their fingers—it’s a whole different level of expression.

Congratulations, PaJaC!
It's now exactly the sound I had in my head.
That's just as much as we can hope for with any guitar. Cool beans!
A very special NGD: a custom build that brought my ideas to life.
