Hi, new forum user and new player here. My friend (who plays alto sax) and I are wanting to play Shorter's Black Nile at an upcoming jam session, and we both want to play the melody. However, we were curious about who should play what part on the tune's B section. Should I play the harmony part while my friend plays the main line on sax or vice versa? What's typical? Attached a picture of the relevant section in the sheet music. Thank you.
(Also, obligatory "sorry if this is in the wrong section")
Generally (no hard and fast rule) the sax would take the top line. Thats just because sax will blow guitar out of the water in terms of projection and the top line is usually the melody.
Listen to Miles and Milt Jackson on Bags Groove. Miles plays the melody the first time, while Milt plays the lower line. Then they switch. But whatever miles is playing sounds like the melody because of how much better the instrument cuts through.
I am also a big fan of Nelson Faria’s playing. My first observation is that he is using his fingers and not a pick. I want to assume you’re already doing that, but thought I’d mention it. ...
Melody is usually the last word here. Using a 9th on the VI7 chord is not unusual. Pennies from Heaven is another example.
However the b9 has become more popular on the VI7 so for soloing over...
Hi, thanks for the feedback. I also went to that decoder site first trying to research this. If you read their disclaimer, they don't support serial numbers from the 80's. The year code just says...
When I read your first post once again after all the answers you've had by now, I realize you have a very complete arsenal of guitars. Archtop, Telecaster, flat top. I didn't really take notice at...
Nice! Sounds good.
For the head, you might consider some slurs — hammers, pulls, one-fret slides.
It sounds like you’re picking every single note, which is impractical as the tempo increases on...
Meanwhile, I found another problem (fortunately, fairly minor) - I checked the braces and discovered that the treble side brace was detached from the pickup rout almost down to where the bridge sits...
I had a vintage 175 refretted with SS frets.
The plinkier tone DID bother me. I ended up selling that guitar. If SS frets don't bother your ears, you are lucky. Fret jobs here in California are...
I'm sorry Delta put you through that Overzealous gate-keepers certainly make it a challenge. I have a Calton case with a Colorado cover, the backpack straps kind of disguise it as a gig bag, and...
It's pretty good, you have the makings of a good player.
One thing. All your solos were in the same area of the guitar and it can start to sound all the same. Starting low and working up is a...
I would not take an anonymous Craigslist poster's word over that of the seller....

This is a really sweet tele and am listing it reluctantly.
The good: I'm not sure who made the neck and body, but both are very high quality. The neck has what looks like a straight-grained...
