Huge fan of Laura. That would get my "favorite balled to PLAY" vote.

    Tenderly rules
    oh and misty

however I usually play misty with a double time feel.

    Probably Solitude

    In my solitude
    You haunt me
    With dreadful ease
    Of days gone by

    In my solitude
    You taunt me
    With memories
    That never die

    I sit in my chair
    And filled with despair
There's no one could be so sad
    With gloom everywhere
    I sit and I stare
I know that I'll soon go mad

    In my solitude
    I'm afraid
    Dear Lord above
    Send back my love

    Yes.

    Laura

    Scott Hamilton, superb.

Gene Tierney in the film Laura. What a beautiful woman.

Indeed many nice ballads, hard to pick 1. I had to go listen to the thread. The different versions of Round Midnight were great. The bebop ballads are great too like If You Could See Me Now. Yes, Misty rules.

Bebop ballad, Embraceable You which was mentioned.

Laura is a beautiful tune. It's probably Jimmy Smith's most haywire ballad which is awesome.

    Ben Webster: My Funny Valentine.

I'm hooked on Ben Webster's breathy tone.

Another is this, from the “Awakenings” soundtrack. Dexter Gordon “plays” it in the movie.

Even a saxophone player can make this one sound beautiful...

It’s already been mentioned, so here’s my favorite versions of Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most, 1 vocal, 3 on guitar:

It was actually Johnny Smith that got me hooked on the tune, but I prefer Kenny’s version, esp. using a Dom7 instead of Maj7 on the 2nd chord, which is what I use when playing. Then I heard Betty and it was all over…

This is one of my fav versions, sounds like he's singing through his trumpet. (Yet, he's considered to be pop music.)

Re: You Don't Know What Love Is - As I mentioned in another thread, Larry Coryell's acoustic rendition of it on his 1968 album, Lady Coryell, is lovely.

Hmm, missing the written introduction which sets up the mood of the piece - a la Sarah Vaughn's rendition.

And right beneath Never Let Me Go on my list is The Nearness of You. Here's the way Maci Miller does it, with yours truly on guitar plus Mike O'Rourke on drums and George Livanos on bass:

Just beat me to it with Laura.

Can't resist. I did a version which has no weird notes for once. Pure ballad and nice new strings :-)

(Can I hear a Lester Young influence.)

One ballad that no one has mentioned is "Cry Me a River" by Julie London with Barney Kessel on guitar.
