Is anyone familiar with PGMusic's Master Jazz Guitar Solos?

Was wondering if the solos are played over standards progressions & if so which ones?

Just found the posts from 2011 with the pdf of the song titles here Master Jazz Guitar Solos - PG Music?

Are you referencing the jazz guitar demo's? If yes, I think they are all originals performed by the real tracks people.

I use this program a lot and find it very helpful.

The reason the songs all have different names than what the PDF file shows is that the selections do not contain any of the copyrighted melody lines, so they do not have to pay royalties.

Is there anyway to playback these files using 'realtracks' if you have the 'all singing/all dancing' version of BIAB?

The disks for the Master's series contain files for both the Master's specific program and BaiB files for the full-on BaiB program.

Actually I owe you thanks for reminding me that I had this program, tonedeaf, in another thread. There's alot to be going on with there. I've managed to play the tunes back in BIAB but there doesn't seem to be an option to convert the midi instruments into analogue 'realtracks'. That said I'm not completely au fait with all the features of BIAB. I just know that I've been able to convert midi tracks to real instruments using other files.

Btw, tonedeaf, when you use the program do you find yourself following the suggested fretboard fingerings as they light up? That's a skill in itself I think.

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Don't study robot solos. The only use for that crap is for reading studies. Study the real artists and solos, not a computer generated solo or midi transcription.

It's not that hard to learn the solos off the recordings. Buy transcribe or amazing slowdowner and have at it.

The feel of those BIAB solos is crap. LEARN THE REAL THING!

Lol, I know what you mean Jack but I was under the impression that Oliver Gannon played the solos himself and converted them to midi files. For a peasant like me they sound doable and some of the bop heads we're supposed to know would probably take me a year at a time if I took them straight from the records, even with 'transcribe'. Oh and maybe I shouldn't say this, but I kinda like a bit hand-holding with the fingerings. You're shaking your head in despair.

whether he played the solos himself or not, midi has a very finite resolution and it's unlikely any of the original dynamics and nuances will be captured on a transcription like that. It might be useful for a quick study but you should always transcribe yourself. It doesn't matter how long it takes you. If you always walk with a crutch you will get very good at walking with a crutch. At some point, painful as it may be you need to throw away the crutch and walk on your own.

Believe me, I was a beginner once. You achieve results based on hard work and discipline, not shortcuts. My son was able to transcribe and play Joe Pass solos in a 6 month space of time through dedication and hard work. It's doable.

Canned transcriptions have their value but should be used sparingly.

Not sure I agree. He's a good guitarist but Great?!?

At any rate, nothing wrong with studying some of his material but this feature of BIAB should be discussed in dark rooms in the backs of clubs only. Students should be studing the REAL material from the greats.

And if you want to study transcribed solos, check out the charlie parker omnibook, not band in a box.

Band in the Box is a great software...I've transcribed a lot of great real solos played by masters but I like also BiaB.
If you work with it properly you will be better and better player.
It is like good metronome with changes for me.
Ofcourse you have to transcribe real masters.

I do not. I can not imagine how you could learn a song without any "look ahead". The other problem is that they only light up when you have the guitar part turned on. I usually turn the guitar part off when I have the basic rhythm down.

Oliver Gannon is a great guitarist. World class. He recorded with Ed Bickert and keeps up just fine, and put out killer material with Fraser Macpherson. He's not Wes or Jimmy Raney or Joe Pass, but he's world class. He really cooks live. Everyone has different taste though.

Transcribing real solos from real records is definitely best, and not that hard once you get into it.

Oliver Gannon is a very fine guitarist and also the primary contributor to the BIAB backing tracks I use for guitar trio sounds. He sounds very much like Ed Bickert. Ed and Oliver are both good examples of great Canadian guitarists. I am pretty sure Oliver does most of the guitar work for the BIAB jazz guitar styles.

I use Master jazz guitar solos extensively and find they are great to give my fingers news places to go when I solo.

What i have not been able to do either is to find a way to use realtracks asbacking with the JGSOLO songs in BIAB they are all there in BIAB and you can use them but for some reason no one from PG music has associated some realtrack to them. I wish they would!
Those solos are great and everyone who hears them when I play some love them. When you listen to them with midi doing the solos they sound dry but when you enter you own feel to those solos they take your interpretation and they sound great. They just need realtrack accompaniments.
PG music help us please! Is there a way to get some real tracks to accompany the JGSOLOS the master jazz guitar solos.

I am not the only one looking for those I am sure.

  22. #21
I emailed PGmusic asking for a set of realtrack to accompany JGSOLOS if they get enough request maybee they will make a set

tonedeaf i use Jazzguitar solos a lot some pointers : you must set the look ahead to 50% and 70% trigger point this works very well for me. Just use OPT enable scroll ahead and set to 70 50. To learn the JGSOLOS it is easier to use the old program Master Jazz Guitar Solos (mjazzsolo.exe) not BIAB as you can select sections and loop them. The program runs well even on win8.1.

I use the tab/notation window set at 50% and I do like the solo's interface better than the full-on BiaB. The question that was asked was if I used the fretboard fingerings that light up when the note is played -- there is no look-ahead on this display; the note/fret/string lights up as the note is played so this display does not have a look ahead and I find it to be of not much use.
