This was Ted Gioia's idea.
Who's better?
The 3 Kings (BB, Albert, and Freddie)
OR
The 3 Johnsons (Robert, Lonnie, Blind Willie)?
As for me, I'm much more inclined to listen to the Kings. There was a time I was deep into Robert Johnson but it's been a long time...
If I had to choose between the Kings, the Johnsons or Muddy Waters, I might have to choose Muddy...

Buddy, Otis, and Magic Sam for me.

What about The Three Sounds? I was always a big fan of Gene Sounds.
I know it upsets the numbers, but Tommy Johnson should also be on that list. Great singer and songwriter, evidenced by his Canned Heat Blues and Big Road Blues.
Speaking of Muddy Waters, I wonder if Tommy's unissued recording, Louisiana Blues found its way into Muddy's song by the same name (my absolute fave in the latter's catalogue incidentally).

Apples and Oranges really...
I love 'em all!

Kings over Johnsons.
But my 3 would be BB King, Albert Collins, and... probably Stevie Ray Vaughan, just because that's who I grew up with.

The King Brothers showed us how to play for audiences. The Johnson Gang showed us what.

How about the Winters? Edgar, Johnny and Paul?
Though only Johnny was a real blues guy.

Maybe I should wait for the fourth of July: Red, Whitey and Blue Mitchell
-
The Jones Brothers, Elvin, Hank, Thad and no relation, Eddie
-
And then there were the 3 Montgomerys...

Does it work with the Jackson Five ?
