Michael Shrieve has a cd called Fascination that is very cool. It has him on drums w/ Bill Frisell on guitar and Wayne Horvitz on organ. Great stuff and definitely not your typical organ trio fare!

...but Pat with Joey & Roy @ Yoshi's was obviously popular, as it won awards. For my money, John McLaughlin with Joey and Elvin Jones (After the Rain) is far superior. All of the others mentioned are excellent too.

But many fine players are out there: Jon-Paul Gard w/John Dalton; Beau Sasser w/Charles Appicella, no to mention my own hometown's incredible Steve Schmidt. I can't pick a favorite, but the McLaughlin disc gets a lot more play on my deck than even my old guard favorites (Johnny, Jimmy, Les, Groove, Larry, Brian & Booker et al) these days.

I love all of these organists and each of them has played organ trio as that is such a traditional part of the lexicon: Trudy Pitts, Larry Young, Richard Groove Holmes, Jack McDuff, Jimmy Smith, Larry Goldings, Lonnie Smith, and Big John Patton. Let’s not forget Chester Thompson from the Tower of Power. He played some great hot organ trio too.

Bob DeVos has a few cd's out in that format as well. Well kinda...Guitar Hammond, drums and precusion. Good stuff there.

Sco's stuff is with their trio, so it was 4, but you're right, hot stuff. I think my favorite organ trio record is Jimmy Smith's "Groovin' at Small's Paradise." Other favorites would be Pat Martino's "Live at Yoshi's," and pretty much the entirety of organ trio soul-jazz. Especially early Soulive (no saxes or vocals) and Stanton Moore's trio work on "III" and "Emphasis on the Parenthesis."

Absolutely agree with Randalljazz. I love Bobby Broom's soulful playing and the Deep Blue Organ Trio tone. The live album "Going To Town" is amazing.

is a great contemporary take on that type of group... I also just got a DVD of the Peter Berstein and Larry Goldstein trio called LIVE @ Smoke. A great show all around, I recommend it to anybody.

Agreed! Bobby Broom sounds great with the Deep Blue Organ Trio as well as Bernstein. I can honestly say I’ve never heard Bernstein play a single bad note. Official Website of Peter Bernstein


Broom plays that Sonny Rollins stuff on guitar and I just love it. I like him in guitar trio as well as organ trio.
