Wow, how could I narrow it down like that? I'd probably come up with a different list on different days. And how do I distinguish between "guitarists I really like" and "guitarists who've changed how I play?"
There's one, incontrovertibly: the guitar teacher who introduced me to jazz.
After him, hmmm. Ed Bickert; Bob Weir/Jerry Garcia; Rory Gallagher; Johnny Smith; Jorma Kaukonen; but other people on other days- Joe Pass, Gene Bertoncini, Jimmy Bruno, Tal Farlow...
Aaaaarrrggghhh!
-
Mostly these two:
Jim Hall
Carlos Santana
But some from these:
BB King
Chico Pinheiro
Warren Nunes
Other instruments:
Paul Desmond
Ralph Sharon
-
John McLaughlin
Ralph Towner
John Abercrombie
Bill Frisell
Pat Metheny
-
I'll just cite my jazz influences.
Joe Pass, because I walk into a club in Toronto, as a very young man, and this diminutive Italian completely changed how I viewed the guitar.
Ed Bickert, because I was lucky enough to see him play, so many times.
Kenny Burrell, because he was more accessible to me. Oh, and that sound!
Pat Metheny, because Bright Size Life!
Bruce Forman, because he speaks to me, through his masterclasses, in a way that no other teacher ever has.
-
Pat Metheny
Pat Martino
Barney Kessel
Wes Montgomery
Kenny Burrell
-
probably more influenced by horn players like Lee Morgan, Dexter Gordon, Bird, and singers like Sarah Vaughn, Carmen McRae, Jo Stafford.
but if had to pick 5 guitar players I'll say the same list as 3rdwave in post #8, but maybe Grant Green instead of Metheny.
I like Green ok, but not my favorite, though I'll get a "hey, Grant Green!" comment about my playing every once in awhile so maybe subconsciously...but actually they're all kinda subconscious aren't they? I mean who thinks about playing like one of their favorites--while they're playing?

In no special order except for Jimmy Raney #1
Jimmy Raney
Doug Raney
John Abercrombie
Barney Kessel
Wes Montgomery
-
Charlie Christian
John Scofield
Wes
Tony Iommy
Dick Dale
-
Benson
Wes
Grant
Barney
Hall
This list could go a lot longer and I feel bad leaving out other guys that were tremendously important to me. Tal Farlow and Jimmy Raney are giants. The time I spent with Bucky Pizzarelli changed my life.

Have I got to 5 yet ?
I apologise for the heinous crime of omitting Wes M, Charlie Christian and Jim Hall, - but I have to be honest, - I never really listen to them.

Johnny Smith
Joe Pass

The one guitarist who will influence me the most to throw my guitars in the garbage, Pasquale Grasso. After watching him play, I don't feel worthy of even owning a guitar. Out of this world. And I hope that he influences many younger players in the future.

2. Angus Young.
3. Jimmy Page.
4. Luther Perkins
5. Maybelle Carter.
There's more but it asked for 5, lol

Chet Atkins
Yeah we probably all heard him early on, and yeah we went to probably all went to other styles, but does his playing ever leave us ?....or better, should his playing ever leave us ?
