The title is the question. We see a good many duet recordings. Joe Pass and Herb Ellis, for example. Was there ever a match up with Joe Pass and Jim Hall?
Wouldn't that have been something!

don't know, maybe a day and night sorta match?

I think it would have been a cluster...er...pluck, actually.

It's hard to think of to master guitarists with such different styles. still, we know that Jim Hall could play bop as hard and fast as anyone, and Joe Pass was a master of the ensemble. So maybe that could have been an amazing album.

I have it from too many sources to be just a rumor that they didn't like/respect each other at all.
The only guy who seemed to be without an ego thing was Tal. That guy loved everybody.

apparently they shared a bill
MUSIC - JOE PASS AND JIM HALL - NYTimes.com
I can see why they didn't collaborate together
-
found a couple of net mentions, that they did indeed play as a duo live
ie this tidbit
I think it is said that when Jim Hall and Joe Pass were about to go on stage together, the rehearsal in its entirety was, Hall said to Pass,” You play fast and I’ll play slow.”
cheers
apparently they played together when jim hall was the guitarist for the merv griffin show and pass was guestingLast edited by neatomic; 02-27-2016 at 06:37 PM. Reason: correction

I believe unlike Jim Hall, Joe Pass did not like playing with other guitar players that much. Both had substance use problems but Jim Hall was spared prison etc. Jim Hall had formal music education (studied composition in college) whereas Joe Pass was entirely field trained. So very different approaches and backgrounds that it is not surprising that they were not inspired to collaborate.

How about that!

From what I've read of their lives, I would think that both temperamentally and musically they would not have meshed well.
