well if we're to be shamed, then we must include Duane Allman by the same token.

Hey fumble . . . nothing to ever be shamed about touting Duane's acknowledgement. He wasn't a jazzer . . but, he was indded worthy of your mention. GREAT musician . . . as it relates to his genre. Definitely one of my all time favorites. Joe Walsh too!! Jeff Beck, Terry Kath, Steve Howe . . . we could each go "On and On". But, like you . . O tried to confine to jazz.

    Thanks Patrick.

although it would normally seem obvious, I didn't see where this was confined to jazz at any point. even the OP had rockers.

Hey nobody else stopped at 5

lol. gee, I hope that wasn't a sarcastic response to my posting of the maestro David Russell. Estaban he ain't.

I realize that Russell's a classical guitarist, but classical was a period from the mid 1700's through early 1800's or thereabouts, yes? I think its best to open one's mind and ears just a tad. great jazz and classical players and composers have admired the other guy's art since jazz was invented. after all, great music is great music, and great playing is great playing.

jazz lovers should find Russell's 2005 CD Aire Latino very accessible given that its entirely comprised of 20th century Latin stuff, some of it quite modern. some of it borderline swings. it won the 2005 Grammy for Best Classical Instrumental Performance - on any instrument. that's rare for the guitar.

Here is Russell playing a very modern piece, in all respects. Done masterfully as one would expect of him. Check it out.

Very nice, and cool piece. Sergio Assad is a monster player in his own right (as is his brother).

My favorites jazz guitar artists and basically the ones that have influenced my playing are:

    1. Charlie Byrd (Jazz Samba with Stan Getz)..a great combo of classical-jazz guitar and sax.
Guild designed the Guild MKVI classic guitar signature model for him

    2. Johnny Smith (Misty and Moonlight in Vermont -Johnny Smith Quartet) what can you say about lush-smooth-eloquently executed chordal sequences expanding the melody and Johnnys beautiful clean runs. The CEO of
Gibson in the 60s (Ted McCarty) loved his guitar playing so much..he colloborated with Johnny on the L5 Johnny
    Smith signature model

    3. Wes Montgomery (Boss Guitar - Days of Wine and Roses, Canadian Sunset) with the great comping of Mel Rhynes
on organ...this is as perfect as it comes...and again Gibson's homage to him is the Wes Montgomery L5 signature
    model
    4. Howard Roberts (H.R. is a dirty guitar player)...smoking!!!!!! Gibson-Epiphone and their unique oval sound hole
florentine cutaway all black HR Custom Epiphone in the late 60s.

    5. Number 5, in my jazz guitar "book" is shared by:
Jim Hall (All the things that you are" .....and jazz fusion with the classical " Concierto de Aranjuez"
Wow! ...with trumpet Chet Baker, sax Paul Desmond, piano Sir Roland Hanna, bass Ron Carter, drums Steve Gadd..it just doesn't get better than this!
    Lenny Breau (Bluesette)
    Barney Kessel (Autumn Leaves)
Kenny Burrell (Midnight Blue and Guitar Forms..and my fav "Last night when we were young"
Kenny plays this eloquently pick style on a nylon string with staccato counterpoint brass..
man! that is so avante garde!

and oh yes ...a few more jazz masters.....
Ed Bickert (Ed Bickert trio " easy to love"
George Benson (playing Stevie Wonder's "Lately"...

    ok I'll stop there...

I'm on a Bird kick now so it's all about him, Wes and Christian. Cootie Williams too.

I'm spectacular too. Well, occasionally I guess.

I think Russell has laid down some tracks for Diana Krall on her "Look of Love" album.

    namely: Love Letters
    Cry me a river
The night we called it a day
I get along with you very well
and my favorite..."Maybe you'll be there"
