Here’s another one I’ve been working on.

One-octave scale runs and thinking about scales rhythmically.

Eventually I’d like to get to passing note scales, but at this point I want to be working with material the students have under their fingers already and get them to think about it in different ways.

One-octave scales rather than smaller lines because you’re able to aim for the note you want by just starting an octave lower … you hit an F on beat one of your D minor and, if you’re playing continuous eighth notes, the next note should be the note you want to hit from the next chord, just an octave above or below. So it can be technically trickier than shorter scale runs, but musically a bit easier.

This, along with the enclosures from the Jim Hall lick, is working up to some work on using guide tones to build lines.

I like that it's in Bb. Very useful key to read in, as jazz musicians, it should be our home base key.
