I use a 2mm stubby, and don't really wanna change. Regardless of pick type, I feel pain at the side of my fingernail where it meets the flesh of my index finger.
I find I need to hold the pick higher up so that it is above the fingernail enough to avoid the pain. Problem is I find it harder to control the pick up there.
Not really asking for a solution, I don't think there is one, but would be interested to know if anyone else has discomfort issues around the pick grip area?

You should perhaps try a thumbpick used as a flatpick...?
The pressure on your index finger would be different...

Perhaps a better manicure would alleviate the pain. I don't know what the actual cause of the pain is, though.

Yeah, the pressure of the pick kinda pushes the side of the nail (no matter the length) into the flesh. Pulling the nail completely might help! It's always been a problem, but more so when I play a lot (like lately)...
