What About Volume Pedals

Bill Frisell used to be a heavy volume pedal user way back when.

when he realised that the pedal and the compressor cancelled each other out, he dropped both.

I knew someone who would use a volume pedal to hands-free change volume depending on if they were soloing (loudest) comping (mid) or comping during a bass solo (quietest). They never used it for swells but swore by it for practicality.

This was it for me. Back when I did Gypsy gigs being able to switch from rhythm to soloing in a single beat was great

I like volume pedal for the hands free changes in volume and because because an active pedal change the tone less than the volume knob. Must have a knob to set minimum volume though - I think it's harder to turn the right amount down on a volume pedal than on a guitar where I know that 7 or whatnot is my default rhythm volume. Heel down = rhythm is workable
