Just purchased a Guild X170 and I'm having trouble placing and dating it. It's this one:

Rufus Guitar Shop | Vancouver's Best New, Used, & Vintage Guitar Shops

My X170 is 16.5" lower bout, 2.5" deep, no master volume, pickup selector is at the top of the body. Serial # is AK170938. I have tried to find the serial # on :

    and

    Guild 1997 X700 Stuart | GAD's Ramblings

The Guild X700 is a guitar that was pretty difficult for me to come by while also being high on my list of guitars that I wanted to review. Once I got one did its high-end nature make me a better player? Could I rip George Benson licks without thinking about it? Did the very quality of …

The guitar was just delivered today. It's not essential that I find the year of manufacture, but it is getting me curious. Oh ya-the store says that it was made in Westerly, Rhode Island in 2001, just after Fender bought out Guild, but they have no proof.

    Help???

The serial doesn’t seem to match up with the official Guild chart unless I missed it.

I know, the serial did not match up on the sites I looked at either. The guitar's dimensions seema bit different too-2.5" deep and 16.5" lower bout. Wonder if it was a special build for NAAM or something. The store add said that it was made in Westerley just after Fender bought Guild. Any idea what year tht was?

    Thanks

2001 wasn’t right after Fender bought Guild….it was 6 years later. I’d take that’s shop’s claims with a grain of salt.

    That's what I'm thinking too.

BTW: I just noticed that the name of the guitar on the inside label is X170 AB

Anyone have an idea what AB stands for?

Sorry for the confusion, I got my Guild model numbers mixed up. I bought a Guild X170, not a Guild X700.

Oh man, Rufus! I lived around the corner from that shop years ago when I went to UBC, in my memory they always had cool stuff. Looks like that's still true!

If I recall, the charts don’t match up with the guitars.

But years ago I found a Guild specialist on the Guild guitar site who is something of an authority on Guild guitars. I don’t know if he’s still there but it’s worth posting your question on the Guild site. Good luck!

X170 is 2.5" deep. Also, as stated above - AB is the color. I have the same guitar, from 1997.

The link to the Rufus website isn't working for me, they may have taken the listing down. I remember looking at an X-170 they had a few months back. If it's the same one, then IIRC it has the Seymour Duncan pickups which would be a good thing, but it will be a great guitar regardless. Have you checked out the X-170 page on Gary's site, also the one where he tells you how to distinguish between the different generations of humbucker?

Yes, Rufus took down the link. It was the same X170 I was looking at it for a couple of months too. Thanks for the link to Gary's site.

    So, it’s dated as a 1998.

Hans is the guy I was thinking of. He’s been on that website for a long time. I’m happy he could assist you.
