I haven't played my archtop guitars in weeks. For some reason, one day I pulled down my 1964 Hagstrom I... yes the one with the read vinyl back and the yellow and gold plastic front plate... plugged into the Tone Master Twin Reverb, and just played my usual mediocre jazz standards. After an hour or so, I pulled down the Telecaster. Then the (O God forgive me) Squier Jazzmaster. And for the last several weeks, solid-bodies are all I have been playing. Same music, same style, but on these guitars that were just cut out on a band saw somewhere. Gotta say, I'm really enjoying them! That Hagstrom is like having a strat with a 24.75" scale. The Jazzmaster is just crazy fun to play and to play with, and of course a Tele is a Tele.
I likely will return to the Gibsons one day. But for now the L5ces is just staring coldly at me with a judgmental eye... flirting with cheap girls while the lady looks on. I have no shame.

These things happen.
I've been playing almost all nylon string for months. But an incident with a cheese grater and my thumb the other day put fingerstyle playing to rest for a bit...so today it's been my 575...might need to bring the tele out too...

You should play what inspires you! My Carvin Alan Holdsworth guitar has me smitten for over a year now, Lol!

Well.. umm..actually.. cut on a band saw by someone would be handcrafted. These were probably cut by automated machine tools.

I've been doing worse than that. I've been playing mandolins. I have a home-built semisolid, a Fender semi, and a vintage acoustic mandolinetto, as well as a home-built mandola. They also need a little love now and then. I don't believe that it's a mortal, or even venial, to play instruments other than archtop guitars. We need no forgiveness.

I wake up early to practice and my morning practice setup is a solid body and an amp barely loud enough to be heard in combination with the acoustic sound of the guitar. Even an unplugged plywood archtop is too loud at 5 am.
As a result I’ve been doing most of my practicing on strats, teles, and now the les Paul. It’s a different beast but I have come to really appreciate that sound, not just for jazz but generally.

Changing voices is a good thing. You will appreciate the archtops more when you go back to them.

I have six plank guitars and I use them on jazz gigs all the time. And I am not humiliated in the least making that "confession ".

Some of my favorite guitar players play Tele's! But they also play archtops, flattop, classical, etc.
It's a good thing Deacon!
They come in all shapes and sizes. More guitars to love.
One of the things that I like about my tele is that I don't sweat about letting it sit out in the living room. Archtops need to be treated like a princess!

Can’t argue with an inspiring tone no matter where it comes from.
This one was pieced together from Warmoth parts. Sometimes it just comes together! (It now has one volume, two tones and an Ibanez style five way switch.)

ah, the cheese grater incident. There could be a song in this for you .... Not a fan of Bart Ehrman's historical writing. He is a specialist in manuscripts and scribal practices, but not actually trained as a historian. But most of what he writes is historical. I hear you. I play my Fender-type partscasters way more than I play my archtops. It might be because my first electric was a Fender Tele back in about 1980, but those designs fit me like a glove. I still like playing my archtops, but when I feel like I want to play without any resistance at all I pick up one of my partscasters. I don't remember who I saw on YouTube a while back, but it was a prominent guitarist. They play both Fenders and Gibsons, but they remarked that they could play the Fenders smoother and faster. They weren't saying that one was better than the other, but they seemed to insinuate that the solid bodies were just easier to play. Maybe that was the whole point in inventing them in the first place?

I love the idea of archtops but I always end up back playing planks. These days my customized Mustang us getting pretty much all of my playing time.
