    The problem I've heard of, even in tr versions, was intonation problem due to incorrect spacing of 13th and 14th frets IIRC. Some photos are quite revealing.

    I have a 1958 Senator, no adjustable truss rod - huge chunky neck. Makes even the thickest Gibson neck seem skinny. I got used to it, but it's not for everyone.
    I use this guitar for gypsy jazz mostly. It also has the strange 13th and 14th frets... not sure when Hofner finally fixed that...
