no, it's not Merle Travis's or one of Kenny Burrell's
granted, it's a beautiful example, but not sure how he came up w this price which is about 10 times what it's worth
obviously fishing and/or just doesn't really want to sell
there IS a best offer option though

Maybe he hit an extra zero by mistake? An absurd asking price to be sure.
-
Beautiful for sure, but you could probably buy a '58, or '60 Les Paul for that?

heck, for that price you'd think he'd offer Free Shipping at least, lol!
So if he actually sold it at that ridiculous price, what would tbe Reverb and paypal charges be?
-
Perhaps he doesn't really want to sell it, and needs to placate some unnamed party.
Or he's just high or something.

It used to be that you bought an instrument from a dealer, if you wanted to sell it you consigned it with the dealer or traded it in on a new instrument. The dealer had a vested interest in balancing getting as much money as possible for an instrument versus never being able to sell it, and they had a very good idea of what prevailing prices were. Competition kept that down to some extent. Since virtually all archtop guitar sales seem to be online private seller situations except for a couple of specialist dealers, people's pricing is often driven by uninformed greed or cynical greed. People selling instruments this forum, for example, tend to be pretty well aware of what the marketable values of these instruments are. I think that's why we don't tend to see stupidly priced items very often.

It’s the rarest and finest ever made! Even with the stripey spruce top and plain Jane maple back. Geez Louise. Does it have PAFs? At that price let’s hope so.
I agree that it should be under $45K, but I’m not an expert.

I'm really surprised that the PG is intact. It's nearly a half-century old. And the tuners look really shiny. Has this instrument been played?
Oh wait! I see he (or someone) paid almost a thousand dollars for it!
It's inflation!

You can't fault someone for just asking, it could happen.

Lots of people with too much money, he's just not asking enough..

I NEVER take these ads at face value - the seller def. knows what he's got and makes it public. Eventually a serious buyer will come in and a mutually agreeable price will be discussed. The high asking price keeps away the tire-kickers etc. I remember seeing the ad for a blonde acoustic Super-400 Premier (first issue with a cutaway) on Gbase for at least 10 (!!!) years in a row - it's an age old marketing ploy. If I were ever to sell my own Super400 I'd ASK for $ 18000 and settle for $ 12000
Re the guitar in question : it's a nice piece with some interesting features - the 3-piece neck is a left-over one from an older batch, right in between the switch from 3 to 5 piece but it already has the newer headstock shape. If the hardware incl. the pickguard is indeed all 100% original then it was very likely never played but stored in a dry and safe place. BTW, the mottled pg on my own '63 Super (#75597) also looks like new, no shrinkage, no warping, no decay.

It's just a 1963 Super 400 ... For it to be a 1/4 million dollar Super 400 someone needs to buy it first

Or put another way - -if and when you ever choose to sell your home and the RE agent suggests listing it for $40 million, hoping to sell it for $400,000. I'd suggest finding another agent.....But hey, if time is no issue at all, and you're not getting older like I am - - -
Just my 2 cents......
