This is the model released in 2017 to celebrate 40 years with Ibanez. Only 40 made. I heard they were coming out and contacted a number of authorized Ibanez Dealers (worldwide)like Music 123, Sweetwater, Guitar Center, ect. Turns out each authorized dealer was allotted ONE guitar, I think that translates to Guitar Center the Chain getting one. There were ads well ahead of the release where you could lay your money down online and order it. I didn't do that (I was bidding on George's Red GB5 at the time). SO I DID call a number of these chains and that's when I got that speil. MOST told me the guitars had already been claimed. SO I forgot about it, I would do an occasional search but always get the lesser model, the GB40th II the one made in China.

So fast forward to about a month ago. I search on Reverb for Ibanez GB and boom it shows up, the listing had been up about 5 days. I made a best offer with a cordial note and get called right away by the seller. He's in North Hollywood and his music teacher knows George well. The teacher reaches out to George and this was the guitar George came up with, and autographed (see the date). FedEx had it packed 90 minutes later, good kid too, that was his first ever sale.

It's a lot like a GB12, fancy wood and all but unlike the GB12 the GB40 has an all maple neck (the GB12 a mahogany/maple/mahogany neck). Fatter body, lovely fat tone, an joy to hold and play. Fast GB12 like neck but not skinny...

Never search for your Holy Grail online if you have no will power.

    Big

Do you think that this might be the same guitar that George is holding?

    Hi Mike,

I've been following your posts on this forum for a while and because you have such a great collection of ibanez benson models and are a long time jazz axe player, I wonder if you could elaborate a little more on the differences between the GB-12 and GB-40th.

I already have a GB-12 and have found a GB-40 online for sale(not signed like yours. I've been a student of Peter Farrell for the last year & 1/2 and I was looking for something a little bigger and rounder sounding like maybe a GB-200 but I really love the proportions of the GB-12. Can you give me a little feedback on owning and playing the GB-40th and compare the sound to the GB-12 you also have I believe?

    Cheers

Big Mike hasn't posted in over a year, as far as I can tell. I haven't heard anything about how he's doing; does anybody know? I hope that he is well.

Im BigMike and after a hiatus I came back. I’d asked the moderators to delete all my threads and this one was missed. I was truly disgusted with a small clique of members here and from their recent behaviors on “The new Campellone batch” thread quitting here still seems right.
I read here as often as my tired old eyes allow me. I’m still buying and loving my guitars and amps

my warmest regards to uou all

i think you should look into the GB200 and ask Peter to use it during some of your lessons. I don’t think the difference in tone between the GB12 snd GB40 is that noticeable.
    all the best to you

If you want to resllybup your game there is a GBY2K on Reverb, I have no affiliation, it’s in Brazil and it’s even signed by GB with an array of backstage photos
its a unique instrument: exquisite woods, pressed not laminates. It’s a little less bling but in hand it’s amazing
    Here is mine

I’m more than happy with the GB200. It’s got a sweet acoustic tone with 0.14 flats.

Thanks so much for your opinion, I value yours as you have handled so many of the GB models over the years

while your Y2K is stunning ?, I was looking fit a deeper box and was under the impression that the gb40 th was deeper than the gb-12 (hence rounder sounding… I’ve noticed Peter Farrell seems to go to his gb40th when he gives finger style lessons in his videos)

Also, can you help me clear up the laminated vs carved woods used in the gb anniversary models… it seems different web sites offer contrary facts on the matter.

    love that you’re back!

    cheers from Canada

The GB12 and the GBY2K are the same depth
The GB 12 is a laminated Guitar the GBY2K is made of solid words that are pressed.
Peter FarrellHas worked with George Benson for years very closely and he loves that GB40 because that is George Benson’s personal GB40
that he gave Peter in 2019. the love flows very deep between those guys
I still think you should try a GB 200 or a GB5 for that fatter tone. you’re going to get it with the set in pick ups it’s really a fabulous guitar
And lastly yes almost all the information on the GB models is inconsistent an incorrect and unfortunately I but Ibanez is the company responsible for most of the misinformation. I jokingly referred to it as “lost in translation”

I think the world of Peter fella not only is he a monster talent but the kids just a really really good person he’s so serious about what he’s doing and yet matter-of-fact about it it’s a real pro brilliant.
He’s like a nephew to me and I’ve gotten a lot of great guitars from him - many of the pieces that George Benson gave him trickle down to me when Peter needed money to come back to America to see George
here’s two GB5s - the first one you see Peter and I holding it at O’Hare airport - a Sunburst great guitar
this model might be right up your alley and they’re not that expensive when you find them on the used market and then there’s the red GB5 that’s notoriously a guitar George toured with her for years and I won that in 2017 or a heritage auction that was like a dream come true one of that and then seeing George backstage the next night man I was floating

    Hey Big Mike,

I had read your posts on winning that red GB-5 a while back, what an amazing story...

Ok, I will check out opportunities re: the GB-200 and GB-5, and maybe the LGB-300?

Can you comment on the differences between the GB-200 and the GB-5 that you own?

Also, can you confirm that the GB-40 th has greater depth than the GB-12?

I looked at the reverb site and can't find the link to the Y2K you are referring too..

    Always enjoy reading you
