    weirdly, that's how i use my gretsch, too. for darker tones, i use one tone switch setting. since i don't really like the second one all that much, i use the individual volume knobs from there to darken it, much like a tone knob. and then i have the master volume (with treble bleed) to manage overall volume and gain, if need be.
