[QUOTE=cosmic gumbo;409714]Starting from 1974 in chronological order:
I'm not afraid to gig with cheap guitars if they play well and sound good, and everything sounds good through my 1968 Fender Deluxe Reverb.
I once told a story here, about a very dear friend and a monster talented player. He unfortunatley developed a love affair and subsequent addiction to the cursed white powder. Lost everything . . friends, family and needless to say . . all his gear. Well, he admirably cleaned his act up and became drug free. But, he still had nothing. I lined up an audition with one of the most popular bands (at the time) in NJ. He had no gear to do the audition . . not even a guitar. I had several. I asked him which one of mine he would like to use for the audition. He simply said . . "just lend me one with 6 strings" . . . and winked at me. That was 35 or so years ago. He's still clean and sober today . . . and playing better than ever. Oh, by the way . . I ran into him in Downtown Jersey City about 8 months ago. We had a good chat about all the old times. I asked him what kind of guitar he was playing these days. His response was . . "it's an old Gibson semi hollow . . 335 I think." I asked him if it was all original. His response was . . "How would I know that?" I asked him how he liked it. His response was . . "I like it just fine. It does everything I need it to do and it stays in tune. What more do I need?"
There's a lesson in there somewhere.

Okay, let's see where this takes us:
'70s
Cheap steel-string acoustic - Regal or Regent or something like that
El Degas copy of a Gibson Marauder
Yamaha classical
Sold them all off when I started college in the early '80s. Didn't own any guitars again until 2005. Asterisked guitars are the ones I still have. These are in no particular order:
Godin 5th Avenue (my entree into playing archtops)
Godin Kingpin CWII
Godin Summit CT
Godin Detour
Godin LG HMB
Godin ACS nylon
Godin A6 Ultra
Godin A12
Simon & Patrick Woodland Mini-Jumbo
Seagull 12-string
Yamaha electric 12-string
Godin Freeway
Aria FA-71
Epiphone Custom Shop ES-175
Ibanez AG-75
Squier Pro-Tone Telecaster Thinline
Squier Precision V (which I defretted myself)
Breedlove Stage 250
Danelectro Baritone guitar
Squier Pro-Tone Strat
*Almansa classical
*The Loar LH-300 acoustic archtop
*Squier Standard telecaster (outfitted with EMG pickups)
*Godin SD (ripped the electronics out, now outfitted with EMG strat set)
*B.C. Rico RW-2a acoustic
*Epiphone Sheraton II (MIK)
*Schechter Jazz 7
*Squier Active Jazz V Bass
*Squier Standard P/J Bass
I THINK that's all of them...
The tele has been with me the longest, out of the electrics. The Almansa was the guitar I bought to get myself back into playing. All of my electrics are strung with flatwounds, even the ones I play rock/pop/blues on.
If I had to pare down to one electric - the Godin SD. It has the most useful range of tones, it's quiet, it has a trem (I like playing surf.)
I think I've learned that I generally like 24.75" scale lengths best, though I'm fine with the longer scale on my acoustic, the tele and the 7-string.
I do like having a humbucker equipped guitar around. Whenever I've gone to just single coils, I feel like I'm missing out.Last edited by GodinFan; 03-23-2014 at 04:54 PM. Reason: sold a guitar!

Strangely enough, the only guitar that's intrigued me of all the lot is the one with no name; I thought about buying it, even called the original luthier. I'm sure it's long gone by now.

At some point, I will feel a need to purge my small collection down to about 2 guitars, though. The L5 and the Solomon are keepers.

2b, have you found any keepers in that long list? Or, is that not the plan?

Fun thread , brings back memories....
the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly:
hunka junk classical
Teisco del Rey "strat" (ouch)
Aria SG copy (1st playable electric and a winner)
Yamaha CJ series auditorium acoustic
70's American Standard Strat
early 70's Gibson Les Paul Gold Top (one that got away - stolen in home invasion)
squire American Strat
Martin D12-28 12 string
80's Fender Strat (souped up with humbuckers - hey, it was the 80's)
'68 Gibson ES335 orange label - (destroyed - vandalized at gig, cue violins )
*'93 PRS custom w birds
*'94 fender 40th Anniversary Strat - 20 years and still going strong, love this guitar
*Alvarez Yairi signature
*Alvarez Classical
*Ibanez AG95 arch top - it'll hold me over while I educate myself and shop around
probably missed a couple and didn't list a couple of banjos and mandolins. *currently owned

For most of the '80's and '90's I had exactly 55 guitars. The
number was determined quite scientifically by seeing how many cases I
could reasonable fit into the room we had dedicated for this purpose.
To make this happen, a fair number of them had to be semi or solid
body.
Although the number was fixed, many of the guitars were changed quite
frequently. Over the period in question, the balance went from an
eclectic mix of mostly vintage instruments to mostly recent Gibsons.
At the end of the century we moved and I sold many of the guitars.
There's nothing like having to pack and ship a bunch of guitars to disabuse
one of the urge to collect. Well, almost.

1973 Gibson L-5CES Natural
1963 and 1969 Gibson Sunburst Byrdlands
1959 Gibson ES-355TDC mono electronics and Bigsby
(2) 1958 Gibson Les Paul Gold tops w/ PAF's
1956,1961 Gibson Les Paul Customs
1990's-2000's> Gibson CS Johnny A, Pat Martino Custom, ES-345,Non Reverse Firebird
Heritage 1990's H-550,Roy Clark,Millenium Ultra,H-535 mostly sunburst
Hamer Monaco, Monaco Super Pro, Newport 3 different versions, Talladega
Fender Strats and Teles probably every version old and new from 1954-1990's
What I've learned is while some of these guitars were exceptional, the newer instruments are generally better over all and as functional tools.
If I had the common sense to hang on to the most valuable ones , I could probably retire comfortably. But I usually only had 1-3 guitars at a time over 45 years of playing guitar. And was and still am primarily interested in guitars from a players , not collector's perspective. DUMB ME!
