Music can be as complex as you make it, but, at least my advice is, use complex ideas to serve the music.
If you constantly force changes onto a harmony that isn't really a vessel for it, odds are your audience wont respond well. Music is about, again to me, context. So if a progression goes C Am F G Am C, I can play F myxo since the chord doesn't imply that I can't but the ears will remember E not Eb.

over analyzing the theory can be fun and cool for some people (like me) sometimes, but sometimes all you (and i mean that as a non specific you) need to do is "shut up 'n play yer guitar".
