Nicotine helps prevent the spike proteins from engaging better than your mask does. Getcha pack of smokes!

All 3 major health systems in our region (University of PA, Thos Jefferson University, and Temple University) upped their mask mandates on Jan 6. Masking is required in areas with high risk patients and is “strongly recommended” everywhere else on all campuses. Covid hospitalization rates in our area have steadily risen over the last several weeks.

There are currently 5 known active cases of Covid in our 100 unit condo building. Since January 2021, my wife & I have had the 2 original vaccinations plus all 5 recommended boosters. We also got the RSV vaccine and our usual flu shots this fall. We started wearing masks again last week anywhere there are lots of people or closed spaces.

In addition to our addictions to the steady balance of oxygen in and CO2 out, blood flowing through our pipes, and neurotransmitters coursing through our brains, we love our senses of smell and taste too much to give them up without a fight. We don’t want no stinkin’ respirators!

I had seven months of Covid soon after it emerged. Hell. Since then I’ve had one low-level illness after another. A week before Christmas I was hit with a really strong non-Covid virus that has laid me out. I was violently sick, and then couldn’t see because my face had swelled up so much my cheeks closed my eyes. Four weeks later I can see, take eye drops on the hour every waking hour, am exhausted and suffer bad asthma attacks, plus a persistent dry cough. My doctor put it down to “one of the many post-covid flu bugs that are making us all at the medical centre very worried”. So, not strictly Covid, but a consequence of. The day before this virus hit, I had taken a bus into central Edinburgh for an hour, then returned home. I did not wear a mask. Big mistake.

I’m very pro mask wearing, but being an asthmatic I find them very difficult to use often. I wore them during the remainder of the lockdown years, but had grown out of the habit.

My wife has urged me to take early retirement, 18 months before my pension kicks in. Teaching on Zoom exhausts me, and very often I would sleep on the couch after a lesson. It will be financially difficult to survive over the coming 18 months, so I’m weighing-up the pros and cons. I need complete rest and exercise. We shall see.

Wow, Rob. That’s awful! We wish you all the best for a rapid return from that nightmare.

I personally knew two cats from my past who got Covid and died. Both were in their middle 60's. The first one caught one of the early strains before any vaccines were available, the second one refused the vaccine and caught a pre-Omicron strain and it killed him. He had deep regrets about refusing the vaccine on his death bed.

Darwinism is always at work, like it or not. I turn 67 this year and I plan on fighting the reaper till the end. That said, I will be riding my classic Harley Davidson motorcycles until I can't and I will be engaged in risky outdoor adventures until I can't as well. In my view, a life well lived involves measured risks, and we all need to choose those risks for ourselves. When the reaper does get me, I am hoping to have no regrets. But at this point, I will be getting annual vaccines just in case. From my perspective, it is the prudent thing to do. The science informs me that the upside of doing so outweighs the downside. Others may feel differently, and I will always support their freedom to decide what is the best path for themselves.

@ Rob: Here's hoping that you make it through those 18 months OK!

Thanks! I've had all the vaccines/boosters, and don't expect to get Covid again, though it could happen. My doc is saying there are so many non-covid nightmare viruses on the go at the moment, for which there are no vaccines. That's worrying.

Covid killed at least half a dozen fine local musicians with whom I'd played over the years in Philadelphia plus at least one club owner. I'm all in favor of freedom, but our rights end when our choices materially threaten the lives of others.

Frankly the anti vax anti mask stance is selfish. I support people's right to make a choice but when that choice affects others it's indefensible. Many of these people roll out the fact that they lost money. Sure money is important but at the expense of lives?
I also lost a lot of musician friends to covid, several of whom refused the shots. I bet when they were waiting for the inevitable they were regretting that decision.
Think about how many lives could have been saved if everyone took precautions. If everyone thought the way the anti's did we'd likely still be in a pandemic.

99.7% survivability shows how you guys were duped. Victims of fear based programming. Yeah a couple already unhealthy and sickly people died. It happens all the time.

And the nicotine thing is real, you can find the research on the NIH website. But when all you do is sit in front of your tv, locked in your home, soaking up MSM propaganda like sunlight you will believe any kind of stupid you are directed to believe and doubt any real research that wasn't spoon fed to you by your local talking heads.

No one has a right to tell me to put something over my face or in my arm. End of story. You can be a cowardly shut in all your life if you are that scared, the onus is on YOU, not anyone else.

A brave man dies once but a coward dies a thousand deaths.

Thanks Dean. I am glad I am communicating my ideas to you clearly.

Covid still exists but most of you guys are all out gigging and going to social events again since the fear porn producers aren't running 24/7 news about the dangers of covid on your evening news. Maybe I'm nuts. Maybe I'm uncaring. Or maybe I just don't give a shit. Pick one, it really doesn't matter to me.

Imagine if you didn't give a shit enough to decide to never post here again. It would be a much better forum for it.

Thanks, Chaz. You’ve reminded me of the brain fog, of the time I couldn’t remember who my dear wife was, of the time I couldn’t think of anything in the world that was outside the room I was in, nothing! I survived, thankfully, but my life continues to be affected by it.

DawgBone - I have nothing to say to someone who is so selfish. You are on my ignore list. Good riddance.

    You forgot naiive and selfish.
Since they're apparently good for you isn't it about time for another cancer stick?
Or is that just propaganda put out by the FDA and ACS to put the tobacco companies out of business?

I could list a lot of very good reasons for people to disagree about all things Covid. But I can’t think of any reasons to get nasty or name-calling about it. Especially now.

Some people don't need a reason. It's their raison de vivre.

Dawgbone, I am going to suggest that you get a copy of Dale Carnegie's book "How to win friends and influence people ". What you are doing here may not be very effective.

You cannot influence people who are driven by fear. That would be like trying to reason with a stampede.

I've been hearing that don't-be-ruled-by-fear line of arguments since they first emerged, and I suspect that my youngest brother (who worked with a bunch of macho military-contractor guys) shared some of them--until about a week before he died of Covid at 56. The last thing he communicated with me (by text, since he couldn't talk around the oxygen mask) was that he wished he'd gotten vaccinated and had urged his friends to do so.

I've also realized that it's just about useless to argue with those who hold these views, because they are armored against evidence and structured explanations of things like risk assessment and public-health procedures, let alone epidemiology and virology.

    Typhoid Mary, anyone?
