I know what you're saying. Either the guitar is in your hands or its lost time.

That's not entirely true. Writing, ear training, transcribing, and the like are often most effectively practiced away from the guitar.

You can in fact practice playing music away from the guitar too, I am starting to realise. I've been working at ear training recently, so I was listening to a few figures on the way to a gig on public transport (I didn't have much time that week) mentally transcribed them and then practiced them by moving my fingers for a bit while imagining how it would feel and look.
When I got to the gig I played them perfectly first time.
They were easy little figures really, but if I could get into this further, the possibilities would be very helpful for my working life.
I would in fact, be an actual musician :-)
In terms of technique a very strong aspect is physical sensation, especially if you play a lot already. I suspect that can also be practiced through visualisation.
The instrument of course, is an illusion.Last edited by christianm77; 03-02-2015 at 09:59 PM.

I read on the "interweb"--
Practice what you must, but
Play what you love ☺
