What does a triangle mean in a chord symbol such as " D ___7" where the ___ = a triangle?

    Thanks.

A triangle = maj7, interestingly supposedly attributed to John Coltrane.

Coltrane spent long hours practicing while staring at
this... perhaps the triangle meant something to him?

The delta symbol used to explicitly mean maj7 chord, but nowadays, people are using it to just mean major with no 7th implied. You'll find it used to designate major triads and major intervals, and like the OP's question, you'll see the symbol followed by 7 for a maj7 chord rather than the 7 being intended by the symbol, alone.

I would instantly see a triangle as a major 7 chord.
If I saw that in eg "Love Me Tender" or other similar pop songs I would think something
    was wrong.
Just my 2 cents but Im also old fashioned.

The Delta sign can be found on the Ariel list in the Character Map in W10, like so:

    Chord Symbol in irealPro-delta-jpg

but it won't display here, you usually get a question mark. This is not a question mark from the keyboard, it's the rejected Delta sign:

    ?

What will display, strangely, is the half-diminished sign :

    ø

    For what it's worth!

Glad that diagram meant something to Coltrane, means nowt to me. But then I guess that's why he was Coltrane and I'm not! :-)

I find any sign, triangle, Ma7, Maj7, 69, unnecessary 'cause I'm going to voice that damn major chord the way I wanna.

    My charts say - C , Db , F etc.

Anyone worth their salt is going to know the context.
