Thanks for posting this, Rob, this and another recent related post was a mystical revelation for me.
My background in mindless three-chord rock 'n roll led me to believe that the sixth string should always play the root. While I recently started to play some pedals on the 6th string (always fifths), your post led me to realize that in fact you can play thirds or fifths there as well and they sound absolutely beautiful.
It also got me back into using a pick as I realized these shell voicings are a perfect simple backing for a vocal. Some of us are slow learners..
