I know this topic has gotten a little old, but I thought I'd throw this in: its one of my favorites, but I rarely use it coz it would get old fast.
I have no idea what to call this chord, suggestions/knowledge welcome!
In context, I use the chord as an introductory downward-strum, letting each string ring. The song I use it in is in AMaj.

Yeah... I wanted to call it a Bm add the 2 flat the octave. 2 Weird. How would U notate that in chord-eze? Yeah, it really is a 9. Bm9 flat the octave... still 2 weird and not right.

You could think of it as an augmented maj7, but the maj7 gives it a more extended feel so I prefer to think of the extensions.

This is a nice 2 - 5 voicing before going into a 3-6-2-5 turnaround.
The progression is (in G): Two beats per change
A-11/D7+ to B-7/Bb7/Am7/D7 etc (I like the way it leads to the III chord

Okay, not an exotic one, but I've always loved the 7#9 chord. I like the 5th string root voicing, i.e. in E it would be 7th fret E, Ab, D, G
I also love the major 9th voicings with the root on the 5th string. Talk about a lovely jazz chord. I also like that one because it's perfect for alternating with the 5th interval on the 6th string for that bossa type thing.
But, on a strange note: you know what immediately comes to mind when I hear the 7#9 chord? This going to sound really nerdy, but does anyone remember the old Star Trek episode where the band of space hippies comes on board and Spock jams with them playing some weird stringed instrument that looks like a miniature harp? I think he's playing dom 7s with a sharp ninth in that (or somebody is). All I know is that the first time I plucked a 7#9 chord using the voicing I just described, I was instantly transported to that episode in my mind, and I hadn't thought of it in many years.

^god what a chord...i find it cool because that last open E is lower in pitch than the A on the B-string that precedes it...so when you arpeggiate it you get a cool "out of order" effect if that makes any sense.Last edited by montes707; 10-03-2010 at 02:57 PM.

Also this thread needs to make a comeback, I'm always finding myself interested in the above type of chords...the type (at least in my posted chord) where hearing that chord on its own just gives me this "tingly" type of adrenaline rush feeling.
