    hi there ,

    can anyone recommend a good
    supplier of wire , Pots etc etc
    in the UK

    I have an intermittent fault with
    my Af120 I cannot for the life of me
    track down

    so I’m gonna bit the bullet and
    make up a new loom for her ….

    update I believe I’ve found the problem ….

    when i squeeze the neck pu volume pot I get the loud buzz back

    good I’ve found the source of the fault

    so I now just need a 500k pot
    should I get audio or Log or Linear ?

    what is the best make to get ?

    (I don’t want the ones Gibson use
    with all the change happening between 10 and 6 on the dial)

    I want the one Gibson don’t use

    Given a choice, I use CTS pots, for the volume control you'l want an AUDIO taper, not linear. BTW audio and log are the same thing.

    It could also just be a loose solder joint... the pot may actually be fine.

    thanks for the advice
    (it doesn’t appear to be a loose
    solder joint , unfortunately)

    From reading around I think I’m
    leaning towards a Linear Pot

    I want to get an even volume
    change throughout the pots travel (as per my Ibanez guitars)

    not like a Gibson 335 I had
    where most of the volume drop happened between 10 and 6 on the dial
    that was too sudden a change for me

    Is it still an Audio taper I need
    for that ?

    No, what you want is a linear taper.

    The only difference I've noticed between audio and linear taper pots is where the jump happens. Both will give a small arc where a big difference in volume happens. I prefer audio taper, but it's not really that big of a difference to my ears.

    The whole idea of the audio pot sweep is making it sound linear... because the human ear doesn't hear things the way mathematics might suggest it should. Audio taper is supposed to sound smoother than linear taper for VOLUME pots. That's it's design purpose. There are a few people who prefer linear for volumes, but builders use audio and the vast majority of players use audio.

    Use whatever you like. But just because the linear pot sweep on paper is actually linear, that's not the way the human ear hears it.

    LINEAR VS. AUDIO TAPER?

    We get asked about Linear and Audio Taper pots a lot. Despite choosing which resistance of Pot to go with, there are two types of Pot “Tapers.” Taper refers to how the sweep acts and sounds. Is it smooth and gradual? Or, quick and abrupt?
    LINEAR POTS:

    Linear pots are, well, linear. Imagine a straight line on a graph: electronically, your wiper and taper is just like that – a straight line. You would think that this is the end-all, be-all of pots, right? Well, the human ear doesn’t hear that way (there’s a thing called the Weber–Fechner law).
    What happens? 90% of your perceived signal change is found in the first 25% of the turn. That means you turn your Pot a little bit, and the bulk of the change happens right there. Not very useful for specific applications.
    AUDIO TAPER POTS:

    Audio Taper pots are different from Linear pots as they are logarithmic. Imagine that straight line, only curved in the middle. The result is an exponential increase or decrease in resistance as you turn the Pot.
    What happens? You experience a smoother change when you turn the Pot. This means that you can perceive a 50% loss in volume at the “5” mark!
    We prefer Audio Taper Pots for Volume and Tone, but you can always experiment!

    update

    I believe I’ve found the source of me
    intermittant buzzing fault

    I think it was a bad solder joint
    to the back of the Volume pot

    I have made it good now ….
    cost zero
