Hi, new forum user and new player here. My friend (who plays alto sax) and I are wanting to play Shorter's Black Nile at an upcoming jam session, and we both want to play the melody. However, we were curious about who should play what part on the tune's B section. Should I play the harmony part while my friend plays the main line on sax or vice versa? What's typical? Attached a picture of the relevant section in the sheet music. Thank you.
(Also, obligatory "sorry if this is in the wrong section")
Generally (no hard and fast rule) the sax would take the top line. Thats just because sax will blow guitar out of the water in terms of projection and the top line is usually the melody.
Listen to Miles and Milt Jackson on Bags Groove. Miles plays the melody the first time, while Milt plays the lower line. Then they switch. But whatever miles is playing sounds like the melody because of how much better the instrument cuts through.
Oh noes! I noticed I hadn't seen you around in a while. Don't quit. I think it's essential in all jazz to play with some harmonic grit. So you have to outline some of the changes and be able to play...
I’ve used both those bridges. The StewMac/Benny bridge is a good quality piece.
The replica propeller inlay bridge is also good but quite a bit smaller than an OEM Gibson bridge. Although it...
I'd like to note that the backing to rhythm changes necessitates 2 chords per bar. While soloing over it necessitates not always outlining 2 chords per bar.
That Bill tune is great. I was thinking...
Hey :)
I'm offering my 2006 Gibson Herb Ellis. The guitar got its own sound with a great BJB floating pickup, very fat and jazzy! It has got some good acoustic sound too! The guitar is in very...
This is less of a 'soloing option' because people don't tend to move to a more standard RC changes when it comes to soloing (people being Nat Cole et al) but the T'aint What You Do/Straighten Up and...
For better or worse, I'm copying the head for Scrapple from this Tenor Sax version on youtube, I find it easier to hear, also I can read the notation of the parts I can't hear.
I've just started,...
Playing bad notes happens to me at almost every gig. And most of the times, I am one of very few who noticed it or the rest is just to polite. Even worse than playing a bad note is playing out of...
I didn't see this variant, which I call the monte/fonte but normal people might call the 'up and down'
Bb Bo7 | C-7 C#o7 | D-7 G7 | C-7 F7 |
It does require two chords a bar I'm afraid. It...
I don't know if he is. He seems quite animated about it. I agree no one would say that its ii V to Ab, for the simple reason it doesn't go to Ab. But treating it as if it was a ii V while improvising...
Hi everyone. Here's a fun one I'm slowly working through

Good practice for polyrhythms. The A section is 5 on 2 with rhythmic displacements, the...
