Hi, new forum user and new player here. My friend (who plays alto sax) and I are wanting to play Shorter's Black Nile at an upcoming jam session, and we both want to play the melody. However, we were curious about who should play what part on the tune's B section. Should I play the harmony part while my friend plays the main line on sax or vice versa? What's typical? Attached a picture of the relevant section in the sheet music. Thank you.
(Also, obligatory "sorry if this is in the wrong section")
Generally (no hard and fast rule) the sax would take the top line. Thats just because sax will blow guitar out of the water in terms of projection and the top line is usually the melody.
Listen to Miles and Milt Jackson on Bags Groove. Miles plays the melody the first time, while Milt plays the lower line. Then they switch. But whatever miles is playing sounds like the melody because of how much better the instrument cuts through.
Jack Z I’m usually not a Heritage fan, but I actually prefer the
H-550 model to the Gibson Tal Farlow reissue model. Plus they can be had for half o the asking price. I believe theirs one TGP at...
The Tele is just a great platform to build on. Really depends on being lucky and finding a body and neck that work together and have acoustic resonance. From there it’s just a matter of choosing...

Just about any of them will do fine, even the ones I build still sound like Teles although I experiment with different woods, chambering, pickups, etc. Neck pickup, roll of a little tone and you're...
I have a '52 reissue blackguard that sounds amazing. It took me longer than it should have, but I finally figured out how to squeak some quality tones out of the 'ol cutting board. This got me...
Hi Everyone,
I'd like to get this guitar to a new home before my upcoming move, so I am dropping the price here and on Reverb until someone takes it home. Please drop me a line if you're...
It certainly can be overwhelming, but it doesn't have to. To solo:
You need a song to play.
You need to be able to scat sing a solo you like.
You need to be able to play that solo on the...
I’ll just chime in quickly for now. Hammertone and Deacon have covered the bases pretty well. It’s really down to the individual guitar. Which exact species of woods are used (maple vs mahogany...
