Hi, new forum user and new player here. My friend (who plays alto sax) and I are wanting to play Shorter's Black Nile at an upcoming jam session, and we both want to play the melody. However, we were curious about who should play what part on the tune's B section. Should I play the harmony part while my friend plays the main line on sax or vice versa? What's typical? Attached a picture of the relevant section in the sheet music. Thank you.
(Also, obligatory "sorry if this is in the wrong section")
Generally (no hard and fast rule) the sax would take the top line. Thats just because sax will blow guitar out of the water in terms of projection and the top line is usually the melody.
Listen to Miles and Milt Jackson on Bags Groove. Miles plays the melody the first time, while Milt plays the lower line. Then they switch. But whatever miles is playing sounds like the melody because of how much better the instrument cuts through.

The AR6xy series are probably Eastman's best-sounding archtops in my opinion (the hog B&S tame their bright nature a bit) and this one has an interesting fingerrest for an acoustic instrument....

Also, just realised that all this...

Clearly, there are multiple possible scenarios.
My point was about making maximum effort to stay out the singer's way.
Never's point was partly about how the singer should handle it when the...
Jacob Collier is signed to Quincy Jones. Before that he got notoriety in high school selling vocal arrangements to New York Voices and others. No he didn’t drop out of the sky. His videos promoted...
My first reaction was "who'd create an account with that name and then use an ambiguous abbreviation for Frank" but then realised it had to be him.
We could have welcomed him btw...

Yeah… too true
Tbh doing socials WELL is a whole artform in itself. It takes hard work. Jacob Collier talented as he is didn’t just fall out of bed one day and improvise that stuff.
Even the...
Dear Forum,
I recently bought an Ibanez AG95 and a Fender GTX 50 amp.
The Ibanez is my first jazz guitar. I started playing guitar again after a 25 year break and didn't want to invest too much...
