Hi, new forum user and new player here. My friend (who plays alto sax) and I are wanting to play Shorter's Black Nile at an upcoming jam session, and we both want to play the melody. However, we were curious about who should play what part on the tune's B section. Should I play the harmony part while my friend plays the main line on sax or vice versa? What's typical? Attached a picture of the relevant section in the sheet music. Thank you.
(Also, obligatory "sorry if this is in the wrong section")
Generally (no hard and fast rule) the sax would take the top line. Thats just because sax will blow guitar out of the water in terms of projection and the top line is usually the melody.
Listen to Miles and Milt Jackson on Bags Groove. Miles plays the melody the first time, while Milt plays the lower line. Then they switch. But whatever miles is playing sounds like the melody because of how much better the instrument cuts through.
Sounds good, Lawson.... and I'm glad you didn't transpose it to a minor key. ;)
By the way, are we allowed to play these arrangements really slow and then speed them up a la Les Paul? :pirate:

Of course that is white privilege in a nutshell. But are you blaming the majority of white jazz musicians of the era for that? E.g. that white guy shouldn't waltz right into Harlem since a...

It is a sweet looking guitar in good shape though. Maybe it was someone from here and they will do a NGD. I am curious what it sounds like. I'm guessing it sounds really good.
Do you also play/sing it together already? Asking because I have a hard time imagining that accompanying a singer in jazz is fundamentally different from accompanying a singer in almost any other...
I don't think any one particular flavor of Telecaster is necessarily superior for jazz given the vast expanse of sonic terrain that is the genre.
Take most any Tele, roll off the tone knob and...
