Hi, new forum user and new player here. My friend (who plays alto sax) and I are wanting to play Shorter's Black Nile at an upcoming jam session, and we both want to play the melody. However, we were curious about who should play what part on the tune's B section. Should I play the harmony part while my friend plays the main line on sax or vice versa? What's typical? Attached a picture of the relevant section in the sheet music. Thank you.
(Also, obligatory "sorry if this is in the wrong section")
Generally (no hard and fast rule) the sax would take the top line. Thats just because sax will blow guitar out of the water in terms of projection and the top line is usually the melody.
Listen to Miles and Milt Jackson on Bags Groove. Miles plays the melody the first time, while Milt plays the lower line. Then they switch. But whatever miles is playing sounds like the melody because of how much better the instrument cuts through.
I have thought about that question a lot. It is easy nowadays to judge the people living under the criminal dictatorship in my country several decades ago (allies of the criminal regime in Japan then...
Even using a wound 3rd the two barrels flanking the middle would still need to be compensated for really good intonation. This is the reason 6 saddle bridges are preferred by many.
I can explain how I do it, more or less. It isn't a structured, 100% organized and logical approach. I'm answering your question about how I think. I'm not recommending that anybody else should do...
Actually, you can do fine if you're able to play in the most common keys, the 12 keys approach is primarily a practice regimen rather than a performance necessity.

Google "Ted Greene Telecaster" and the first line of the first result reads,
"With guitar, it is not always about setup, but about touch."
That has stuck with me ever since I first read it.
To build on what I typed before, if you want a Jazz centered telecaster I would choose any Tele you can find with a good neck and proper body routings (MIM Player do have these which is another...
I agree that it is a question of courage and priority. E.g. Courage to lost some of their popularity. Courage to lose income because they lose gigs. Note that I mentioned their families not in...
Here’s a mint condition Gibson L-4CES.
The expression "mint condition" is often abused by the guitar community. Every once in awhile something shows up that is actually in mint condition. This...
To me, a Telecaster is so great because it's cheap and easy to produce. For that reason, I really shy away from the expensive models. MIM Fender's, Squier Classic Vibes, G&L Asat Tributes, and cheap...
