Have you noticed your guitar solos often sound the same, even after hours of practicing scales and arpeggios? Do your improvised solos still miss that authentic jazz feel, and do you keep playing the same things over and over?
I created this course by transcribing solos from jazz legends like Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass, Kenny Burrell, Grant Green, Charlie Parker, and many others.
I noticed that many of their solos use the same patterns over and over, and these patterns are the foundation of the jazz language.
In this course, you’ll learn these simple and finger-friendly patterns.
They are building blocks that are easy to remember and use in your own improvisation, based on melodic and rhythmic ideas found in real jazz solos.

Why learn patterns?
I think you’ll agree that practicing scales and arpeggios is an important part of mastering jazz guitar. These tools are an essential ingredient of the jazz guitar solo, but you need more than just scales and arpeggios to make your solos truly sound like jazz.
Learning licks is helpful, but they can be tough to use in your own solos without sounding forced. This is because licks taken out of context don’t always fit your personal style.
What will you learn in this course?
- You'll learn 87 classic jazz guitar patterns (+ variations) that are easy to remember and use in your solos.
- We’ll cover all the guitar-friendly positions for each pattern, so you won’t get stuck on the fretboard.
- You’ll get 8 video studies based on jazz standards, showing you how to use these patterns in real music. Songs include Blues for Alice, The Days of Wine and Roses, There Will Never Be Another You, All The Things You Are, Solar, Autumn Leaves, and Groovin' High.
- There are also 14 shorter studies that show how you can use a single pattern throughout a jazz standard, like The Shadow of Your Smile, Blues for Alice, All The Things You Are, All of Me, F blues, Bb blues, and more.
- You’ll find 75 jazz guitar licks that show how to use these patterns in your own phrases.
- We’ll go over common chord substitutions to help you add more harmonic variety to your solos.
- You’ll learn how to use jazz scales like the altered scale, the bebop scale, and the harmonic minor scale.
- We’ll explore the 1235 pattern, also known as the Coltrane pattern, along with some of its most useful variations.
- You’ll discover the Cry Me a River motif and learn how to use it over different chords.
- We’ll cover the Honeysuckle Rose motif and other classic bebop patterns.
- And there’s much more to explore!

Robert Baidoo –
I had to read and listen to the videos a couple of times for things to start sinking in. I am glad I did. This has opened up my guitar playing to a whole new level because I am beginning to hear the different chord tones and am actually practising humming along as I recognise the chord progressions. I am building scales, analysing the chord structures, and singing along in tonic solfège. I started intimidated by the score on the first study, Blues for Alice. I slowed the tempo down and hummed along every note first; the correct tones of the accidentals confuse me, but we will cross that bridge soon. I get confused with the fingering of the tabs, but once I slow it down, it sounds ok. Notwithstanding the challenges, I am energised and eager to see what happens within the next few months.
Thanks, Dirk, and to your Guitar teacher also, for turning you on to Jazz.

Absolute gold – this course connects a lot of dots for me. Yes, there is something missing along the way which is how to think in chord tones, not just licks. This course bridges that gap for sure – love it!!

I have been waiting, and waiting, and waiting to buy this program. I got the program yesterday and today I got started. I am loving this! I really like the way it’s set up. You’ve got some licks, a backing track to support it, and just in the first example in the “how to use this course” part I was finally nailing the lick in-time. I have struggled my entire life with keeping time, and I finally feel like I have the patient teacher who will not get fed up with me and tell me to go back to tending bar. Thanks, Dirk, and I’ll be getting into the other programs, too, just as soon as I get into this a bit more. Thanks, again!
Daniel Alvarenga –
This course just started to open another world of what jazz language is about and learning that vocabulary and start building your own way of feeling and playing these patterns or building blocks. I’m just beginning and wonder why no one taught me this before?
Looking forward to growing as a guitarist…

Again, thanks to you! I thought this was the usual loss of money with no results – mostly due to me – but in your course I finally found the “perfect system” to improve soloing.

Dirk, I really like the packaging of this course. I purchased this course and the Chord Melody course, and
based on what I am seeing, I intend to be a repeat customer.
