Have you noticed your guitar solos often sound the same, even after hours of practicing scales and arpeggios? Do your improvised solos still miss that authentic jazz feel, and do you keep playing the same things over and over?

I created this course by transcribing solos from jazz legends like Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass, Kenny Burrell, Grant Green, Charlie Parker, and many others.

I noticed that many of their solos use the same patterns over and over, and these patterns are the foundation of the jazz language.

In this course, you’ll learn these simple and finger-friendly patterns.

They are building blocks that are easy to remember and use in your own improvisation, based on melodic and rhythmic ideas found in real jazz solos.

Why learn patterns?

I think you’ll agree that practicing scales and arpeggios is an important part of mastering jazz guitar. These tools are an essential ingredient of the jazz guitar solo, but you need more than just scales and arpeggios to make your solos truly sound like jazz.

To really speak the language of jazz, you need to build your jazz vocabulary. This is why players practice licks and learn solos from the masters.
Learning licks is helpful, but they can be tough to use in your own solos without sounding forced. This is because licks taken out of context don’t always fit your personal style.
This is where patterns help. Jazz patterns are short musical ideas (melodic cells) that connect your technical skills (scales and arpeggios) to your vocabulary and improve your jazz improvisation.

Think of scales and arpeggios as the alphabet of jazz. Patterns are the words you form, and licks are the sentences you create. Using them together helps you turn your solos into stories that people want to hear.

Many of the greatest jazz patterns of all time are surprisingly simple, but incredibly effective when used in the right context.

I have been using Dirk’s website for a long time – there are a lot of ideas, recommendations and practical tips there. Just sit down, take your guitar and work. Exactly the same can be said about his latest book. A very systematic presentation, the logic of an experienced performer, and the simplicity of presenting complex theoretical material. I sincerely recommend this book to all jazz guitarists, and I will look forward to volume 2. Dirk, thank you, and good luck in working on another masterpiece!

I have studied many of Dirk’s posts, so I was thrilled with this new material. I purchased the course and I can honestly say that it delivers all it promised and more. All players who want to build a jazz vocabulary and understand what they are learning should purchase this course. As always, Dirk lays out the material in a systematic and organized fashion and accompanies the written examples with excellent audio clips. In my view, this course is one of Dirk’s best.

I just want you to know that I absolutely love this new course. I have purchased a handful of your products, and I personally have lacked the energy to really dig into any of them. But this course is so easy to digest that I basically learn a solo, and then sit and play with the licks over other songs and it’s just an incredibly easy way to learn more jazz licks. The way the course re-injects the same licks to help you learn them and to show you different ways they can be used is pure genius.

I’ve been looking for something like this for 30 years.

Thanks and hopefully I’m finished with this course before you release the next one!
