There’s a quiet problem in the world of online jazz guitar education, and it’s one that most platforms don’t even acknowledge: they assume you already play. Not just that you know where the notes are, but that you’ve spent years in another genre and are now “crossing over” into jazz. Jazz Guitar Online is one of the few platforms that doesn’t make that assumption — and that’s exactly what makes it worth talking about.
The training materials here are excellent. I don’t use that word loosely. The lessons are structured with genuine care, moving from foundational concepts through to serious harmonic and improvisational depth. If you’re someone picking up the guitar for the first time and jazz is what pulled you in — not rock, not blues, not pop — you’ll find a real starting point here. That matters more than people realize. Most of us who came to jazz guitar had to piece together our early learning from sources that weren’t really designed for us. JGO removes that friction.
For intermediate and advanced players, the platform delivers just as well. The material scales naturally. You’re not left feeling like you’ve outgrown the content after a few weeks, which is a common frustration with online courses that front-load beginner material and then thin out. Here, the deeper you go, the more there is — chord melody, voice leading, advanced comping approaches, and a range of stylistic explorations that keep things fresh.
What I particularly appreciate are the improvisation examples. Many of them are genuinely foundational — not flashy, not designed to impress, but built to help you internalize how jazz vocabulary actually works over changes. That kind of teaching reflects someone who understands how improvisation is learned, not just how it sounds when it’s already mastered.
And this is where JGO distinguishes itself most clearly from the competition. Many platforms offer jazz guitar content — some of it very good — but there’s almost always an implicit expectation that you arrive with some prior mastery in another genre. That you already know your barre chords, your pentatonics, your basic theory. JGO doesn’t carry that expectation. It meets you where you are, which is rarer than it should be.
If you’re serious about jazz guitar — whether you’re just starting out or looking to deepen what you already know — Jazz Guitar Online deserves your attention. It’s thoughtfully built, honestly taught, and refreshingly free of pretension.

I get tremendous value from the classic jazz sheet music listings, along with the instructional notes and videos that accompany each entry.
My yearly subscription has been an excellent investment in improving my jazz playing.
I highly recommend Jazz Guitar Online to any guitarist serious about honing their craft and learning from the masters.

Without a doubt, I can say these lessons are the best if you are serious about playing. I have been a lesson “collector” and purchased more than a few. These lessons are both useful and cost-effective. I am happy I bought the Pass. Good Job, Dirk.

When I started following the Jazz Guitar Online page, I wasn’t too sure if I could follow the instructions, but little by little, I progressed, although I’m still slow, but I’m glad I didn’t give up. Obviously there are songs that I like more than others, thank you very much for the advice.
