    I feel that the descending chromatic line in that sequence - in the key of Cminor: C, B, Bb, A - often works better as an internal part rather than in the bass.

    A common alternative would be to place the line within a I, V, I, IV progression, e.g.

    Cm: x x 10 8 8 x
    G+: x 10 9 8 8 x
    Cm7: 10 x 8 8 8 x
    F9: x 8 7 8 8 x
