Damn, some good tunes there that I would have liked to do!
-
I know! I didn't realize until I was putting the list together. It probably wouldn't be the end of the world if we repeated a couple of these; I don't think many of the current participants were involved when most of these were covered (Wiz excepted).
-
As it happens, I've done 4 of these on my youtube channel already: Blue Bossa, Round Midnight, Autumn Leaves and Solar.
-
Jehu: Thank you for posting this. Your list and mine are pretty much the same. I agree with your thoughts on repeating some of the earlier songs, however, I would still like everyone to send me a request (PM) so I can add the songs to the monthly polls. We can start doing this with the September poll if I get some requests. This should be really good for the current participants and easy for me since the backing tracks are all saved. I would also like to hear comments on this approach from some of the other members.

Wow, what a list.
My first entry was in Feb. 2013, Come Rain Or Come Shine. I was completely unaware of how many months I've missed since.
I mean, I know I did not post a lot, but for much of the listed I did not even know they were voted.
Practical standards threads are the best thing on the whole forum, IMO.
BTW, here's where I've participated (all clips on YT):
2013
Feb: Come Rain Or Shine
Mar: East Of The Sun
May: Angel Eyes
Sep: This I Dig Of You
Oct: My Foolish Heart
2014
Jan: Black Orpheus
Feb: I’ve Got You Under My Skin
Apr: I Remember April
Oct: Estate
Nov: Wendy
Dec: What Is This Thing Called Love
2015
May: Dancing In The Dark,
Also I have my version of My Funny Valentine, but I did not participate in that thread back in Aug. 2012.Last edited by Vladan; 09-04-2015 at 01:25 PM.

Where can a newcomer to the forum learn the "process" or rules for the Practical Standards thread? Is this a pretty fixed thing that is done or is it just discussion around a single tune? I apologize if I've missed some obvious place where this is explained. I've hunted a bit, but could have missed it. At my age, that happens a lot…
-
No rules. Just record something on "theme" and give as much info about the process as you are willing to. Critiques are welcome. No hard feelings ...
-
I keep losing the current (December, 2015) thread, and searches such as Stella Practical Standards doesn't bring it up. Please add the link to the list at the top of THIS thread.

Thanks, Vladan. I'm already subscribed to it, as I contributed to it. I've bookmarked this page, and am glad to see it now has the link for this month. Thanks again for the help.

Looking over this again, Jehu. Thanks for putting it together. Some of the old threads are just an incredible amount of information. At some point it would be cool for one of us to break down by style etc. Ballad, Waltz, Bop, Modal, Latin, etc.
I think the later ones have tended a lot more towards being ballads, it seems like. I wonder about something like focused thematic nominations occasionally. Nominations for a Latin or Bossa Month once a year or so? At first glance, it looks like waltzes are pretty slim as well. Anyway, I'm an occasional participant only and don't nominate anything. So, I should be quiet.
Thanks again for this thread, and kudos to Howie, as always, for keeping the fire burning.

As the new kid on the block, thanks for taking your time to put and keep up this great listing! Scott

Has there never been a Practical Standards thread on "How About You?"

If it hasn't already been suggested, "I Get Along Without You Very Well", written by Hoagy Carmichael, particularly the version by Chet Baker.

I apologize for the dumb question. For someone looking to get started with these, the links to jazz standards don't have any charts. Are players using The Real Book or other resources for these, along with the recordings?
