A different Autumn in New York

Unfortunately, once I heard this version years ago, I can never unhear it – it's always what my mind plays for me whenever I think of "Autumn in New York".

Well, at least the cacophony is in harmony, both the piano and the singer are out of tune.

I could only bear several seconds of it.

Weston and Stafford won a Grammy for Best Comedy Album - and it was Stafford's only Grammy. But they didn't spare pop music. My favorite among their many glorious recordings is Stayin' Alive. I first heard them on Dr Demento's show - he's a huge fan of their work. Enjoy!

The fact that she could do that consistently is a tribute to her chops - that ain't easy!! I think she even goes a bit beyond Clark Terry's Mumbles.

I have those Jonathan and Darlene records, in fact I'm pretty sure I have nearly everything Jo Stafford ever recorded on original vinyl. I'm such an admirer, if there was still a Jo Stafford fan club I'd probably be president of said club.

Now that that's out of the way nshsi is correct, to have perfect pitch and be able to sing entire tunes out of key like that is almost impossible. He posted a nice guitar recording he did of this tune on the forum, getting back to her "normal" stuff here's Jo's vocal on it. That's some serious vocal control while being really soulful.

This brings back a memory from grade school. Our music teacher one day brought in this album by Jonathan Edwards and it was some of the most disturbing piano playing I ever heard- for that matter probably the whole class had ever heard. After she played a couple of cuts from it she grinned and said, "If you look at the cover of the record here two right hands are playing the piano!"

Sure enough I went to Wikipedia tonight and there was the album cover!
