It appears we’ll be working on Groovin’ High, with a little Miss Ann side plot

By "side plot" you mean those who want to take on Miss Ann and share their progress are welcome to do so?
I wrote this out so I may as well share it, i.e., the attached. It's in the Real Book 1/Jazz LTD key. If anyone would play this differently, what would you change? (besides the key, which may be too high for some guitars). I'll have to check Eric Dolphy's phrasing to see if it would alter how I play it.Last edited by Mick-7; 11-12-2024 at 03:54 AM.

There's a Vic Juris version which might be worth a listen with these questions in mind. It's on streaming.

Here's a version I recorded a few months ago:

It's a Spalt Apex:

Yeah, I mentioned the Juris rendition in your other study group thread. As I said there, he plays the head just as Dolphy played it (and like the pdf I shared) except for one note: he does not play the octave leap - F# > F#(8va) on the first beat of measure 4, he just repeats the lower F#. I have not checked the chords though, there are slight differences in the Real Book & Jazz LTD fake book charts.
I noticed that the Dolphy rendition on Last Date is slower than both the Far Cry and Vic Juris renditions, fortunately for us it does not have to be played at 300bpm to sound good.

No one here is going to play it at 300 bpm.

The chords sounds right, hard to hear the bass player in the YouTube clip. I think Measure 12 is Fo7 as JazzLTD says, but it could also be called a E7b9, as the piano player plays a few 7b9 chords. Dolpy's solo would be a cinch to transcribe.
By the way, Juris and gang changed a few notes in measure 9, why I don't know, I liked Dolphy's line better.Last edited by Mick-7; 11-20-2024 at 05:38 PM. Reason: new pdf

I can do you a dirge. I'll need paying, though.

Actually, the Juris track is more like 230bpm, seems faster when you're trying to play it.

All you'll ever need.

This Sax player sounds good practicing Groovin' High:
