"solo exploration". Like noodling, but nicer words.

Seriously tho, I enjoyed that. It's what I do alot- I just sit down, and instead of working on tunes, I just try to connect to myself, the universe, whatever, and play music. Doesn't have to be a written/scored song, just music.

I like what piano players call it, instead of using the guitarist's term, chord melody. They call it playing the piano.

“Noodling” has long had negative connotations, but for me, in truth, it has been one of the central methodologies of how I learned to play. Nobody ever criticized the painter who doodles, so why the musician who noodles? Noodles heya a hum rap IMHO.

    Kids these days...

Yes it’s chord-melody AND inspired noodling.

A lot, maybe most, great art has come from noodling.

A lot of great pastas too.

The technical term for "noodling" could be "the creative process". It could also be called "following your muse", "contenting to the ether/universe", or as a poster above said: "playing music" LOL

The term does get a bad rap, as if non-structured learning is somehow a "waste of time".
