I want to be able to play my guitar and plug in a mic so I can quickly capture song ideas and, later, work up arrangements.
(I have a DAW and know how to use it, but I want something for the pre-recording stage.)

Not sure there are many options out there. Not something I've looked into before.

    What about a Fender Acoustasonic 15 ($130) or Acoustasonic 40 ($200)?

Recording quick to some type of non-DAW recorder, just voice and mic... And no need to plug a mic into your amp, record the voice unamplified.

It can be done really well with the proper mic placement, and having your amp up just enough to balance with your voice. I'm a fan of Joey Landreth and he has a bunch of videos over the years with that type of recording, notice how on this video you can hear his right hand on the strings when he thunks them muted, you can tell the amp is really at a low volume. Balanced just like someone playing an acoustic guitar and singing with no amplification.

My Mesa Rosette has Mic in as well as DI out for both channels . It doubles duty at the Cafe I work out for most musicians , a true workhorse and ultra versatile with a wide range of eq

Thanks. That looks nifty but it's way more than I want to pay for what I'm after.

    I checked those out.
I think the only guitar amps with XLR inputs are for acoustic guitars. Makes sense. But although I have an acoustic guitar, it contains no pickup (and I'm not intending to install one), so I don't need an acoustic guitar amp.

I'll have to figure out another way. ;o)

That was neat. Thanks. I might experiment with that approach. For one thing, I wouldn't have to buy anything. ;o)

My Roland Cube Street has served me well and it's got a battery powered option. It'd designed as a busker's amp so it's light, rugged and they're easy to find on the used market. Good sound options.

I also love my Schertler Guilia amp. Small, versatile and separate XLR and 1/4" input. Both of these are compact and versatile enough for me to use when playing duo or trio with others, practice and as a test amp on the bench when I'm working on an electric guitar.
The Roland has the XLR 1/4 combo jack

And the Schertler has both on the panel

I think Roland stuff is a bit underrated. I’d have no qualms about gigging a cube. The street cubes are broadly similar but with loads of fab features and run off batteries.

I use one of their portable tiny cubes which is brilliant. Looks like an old school portable radio. (But doesn’t have an xlr out - it’s cheap)

Except for their battery range they seem to have been replaced by the Boss Katana range which I have much less experience with.
