Max, you'll have my full respect. I was ridin' motorcycles for about 20 years without a car as backup (later I could afford a car ) I know what it means making a tour through Europe in November. Wow.
I hope you have heated grips on your motorcycle.

Didn't read the whole thread but riding halfway across Europe on a trial bike and coming back sleep-deprived with an archtop strapped on the back is totally savage. Love it!

    Ok you bent my arm...

Came home with a stunning and flawless 1993 Gibson L-5 Wes Montgomery Custom James Hutchins Master Model.

Some on this forum have shared their experience that the Wes model sounds lighter and brighter than the CES which concerned me.

But after a few chats with some experts at Gibson UK this is not always the case and is specific to each individual guitar and who made it.
They have two in their private collection here in London and they told me there they are the best sounding arch-tops they've ever heard in their lives.
They tried to see if Gibson would sell one of them to me but they couldn't because it's for their private museum or something.

It seems I've got one of those because this one sounds absolutely thunderous! Probably the fattest, thickest, roundest and most powerful tone I've ever heard come out of a guitar in my life and as dark, brooding and moody as that Ukrainian witch I dated once.
It's an absolute beast of a guitar.

Now I have to find the right amplifier to complement it.
(That odd scar looking thing on the upper left is just a reflection and not anything on the body)

Any Gibson L5s or L4s for sale in the UK?-screenshot-2024-11-11-08-33-38-jpg

Who needs that extra hunk of magnets and wires by the bridge? Heh, heh. Welcome to the L-5WM family.

What a great story this was. If you wrote a book about it I would buy it!

I'm in the UK. My story is so boring compared to yours but pretty amazing at the same time. My 2005 L5CES was only a half hour drive away!! Totally unheard of around here. Got it in January.
    Congrats on your wonderful purchase!

I think it's nice if every guitar has a great story attached, and if it doesn't, create it yourself.

The same as every great relationship and marriage..
So you can bore all of your friends senseless with that wonderful and heroic after dinner tale of: "How we first met"

PS: I have far wilder stories than this one. Some I could be arrested for even telling so have to plead the 5th.
